PRO Report: 12th May 2010 A number of Bandon AC athletes representing their various schools competed on the first day of the South Munster Schools Track and Field Championships at CIT on May 6th. Sipke Shaughnessy won the senior boys 400m hurdles. Patrick McSweeney won bronze in the senior boys shot. In the junior competition Colin Kingston won the discus and shot. The May Bank holiday weekend was a busy one for athletes with the County Track and Field Championships being held on Sunday 2nd May followed by the Munster Junior, U23 and Senior Track and Field Championships on Monday May 3rd both at the CIT track. Bandon athletes put in some fine performances on both days. Laura McSweeney who competed at U16 level the previous day won the junior women shot with Tracey Bradfield coming in fourth place. Lyn Bradfield also competed. Joan Healy won the junior women 100m and 200m. Tracey Bradfield came fourth in the discus with Laura McSweeney and Lyn Bradfield also competing. At U23 level, Róisín Howard won the high jump and won silver in the 400m and the shot. Rachel Roche won the javelin, came third in the discus and fourth in the shot.

The senior women’s team won the relay. Liz Coomey won the senior women high jump, came third in the shot and fourth in the discus. Priscilla O’Sullivan won silver in the shot, discus and hammer. Patrick McSweeney won the weight for distance and came second in the shot, fourth in the hammer and fifth in discus. Ronan Duggan won the silver medal the U23 men’s 1500m. Sipke Shaughnessy competed in the junior men 200m.

The previous day, the first round of the County Track and Field Championships took place at the same venue. Again, Bandon AC athletes had some top performances on the day. At U19 level David Reynolds won the javelin and came third in the 100m. Patrick McSweeney won gold in both the U18 javelin and hammer. Eric Stam won silver in the boys U17 100m with Great Okafer taking the bronze. Eric also won the discus and hammer and was second to Shane Howard in the pole vault. Daire Harrington won silver in the hammer and discus. Robert O’Sullivan won the U16 javelin. In the U15 competition, Colin Kingston won the shot, discus, hammer and triple jump and was third in the100m. Promise Okafer came third in the long jump and Fintan Shaughnessy won the pole vault. Oisin Walsh won the U13 hammer.

Britney Okafor won the girls U9 60m with Niamh Sugrue taking silver in the U9 ball throw. Carla Hicks won the girls U12 long jump and came second in the 60m hurdles. Erin Kingston won the U13 discus with Kerri Buckley coming third. Sinead Caulfield won bronze in the U14 long jump. The Bandon team finished second in the U14 relay. Aisling Everard won gold in the U15 1500m. Laura McSweeney won the U16 discus and shot. Liz Prout won gold in the U18 300m. Aine Weldon won silver in the U18 1500m with Marianme Everett taking the bronze.On the road, Kevin Wilmot finished 9th at the Castlemartyr 4 mile road race on Thursday 22nd April with Tom Laffan coming first O40. Tom Sheehan, Paddy Murphy and Declan O’Halloran also competed. Phil Murphy ran in the recent London Marathon and completed the race in 3 hours 42 mins.

Upcoming events include the second round of the County Juvenile Track and Field Championships at CIT on Sunday 16th May. The Rising Sun AC Mile takes place later that day in Ballinhassing. This is a straight mile charity run and always a very enjoyable occasion. More details on the Rising Sun AC website.
