Athletics NI to Host ‘Fundamentals to Olympics’ Conference

Athletics NI Coaching Conference Athletics Northern Ireland will hold their annual coaching conference on Saturday 24th September at the University of Ulster Jordanstown.

The theme is ‘Fundamentals to Olympics’ and will include key note speakers UKA’s Strategic Head of Coaching and Development Kevin Tyler, National Performance Centre Director at Loughborough Derek Evely, Scott Grace from England Athletics and Senior UKA Physiologist Dr Barry Fudge. The event will bring the coaching community together to gain knowledge and more importantly to network with each other. Scott Grace will open the conference with the 365 Fundamental programme this will be followed by event workshops in a number of disciplines such as fundamentals, sprints, throws, endurance and jumps.

In conjunction with the conference Head Coach of UK Athletics and British Olympic Squad Charles Van Commenee will be visiting on Thursday 29th September to deliver a talk to Coaches and Elite athletes on preparation for major competitions. This talk will follow on from the Olympic theme which will have been delivered at the ANI Coaching Conference.

I am particularly pleased that Charles Van Commenee, UKA Head Coach, has found time to visit Northern Ireland and look forward to an interesting contribution from him especially with the London Olympics less than a year away”.

Some of the information will cover the importance of high level competition and how to prepare, benefits of international team selection and competition, aspiration of athletes to compete in the Olympic Games, and the coach’s role in the preparations for the competitions.

“I am enthusiastic about this upcoming conference as it brings all our coaches together to learn and network. It is exciting that we have the high calibre of speakers attending this conference to pass on their knowledge and experiences to our eager coaches attending.

This conference will continue our coach development opportunities and continue the networking links with UKA. I am looking forward to the conference and to working with all our coaches”.

Kevin Tyler, UKA Strategic Head of Coaching and Development said:

“I am delighted to be returning to Northern Ireland for their Annual Coaching Conference which will be delivered jointly through UK Athletics and Athletics NI.

This is an opportunity for all coaches to learn or refresh on current coaching methods and more importantly to network with each other. The conference theme of ‘Fundamentals to Olympics’ will deliver a topic of interest to all coaches attending, and will also build up the excitement for the forthcoming Olympic Year. I look forward to meeting with all the coaches in September.’”

Registration costs £25 per athletics coach or £30 for non-athletics coaches. Please either apply online through www.niathletics.org or by returning an application form with payment.

It is envisaged that the demand for this year’s course will be high (places already taken) due to the calibre of the speakers; therefore it is advised that early return of form and payment should reserve your place. The course will be delivered from 9.30am – 5.00pm, lunch will be provided during the day.
