Inis Iron Meáin 2024 will take place on the island of Inis Meáin in the Aran Islands on Saturday 4 May 2024. Celebrating its 20th year Inis Iron Meáin is the original island road race which continues to attract hundreds of runners and spectators each year to the incredibly scenic island, with a record number of 550 participants at last year’s race.

The race began as a grassroots initiative in 2004 to generate funds for local education, specifically to aid Coláiste Naomh Eoin, a thriving Gaelscoil renowned for its dedication to fostering the Irish language and culture amongst students who come to board on the island from all over Ireland. The race has developed into  a significant event in the Irish athletic and cultural calendar, attracting not just local runners but participants from across the globe.

Mairead Ní Fhátharta, Principal of Coláiste Naomh Eoin, reflects on the growth and unique attraction of Inis Iron Meáin,Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Inis Iron Meáin Island Road Race fills me with immense pride.Over the years, the race has grown from strength to strength, drawing more participants and spectators, which highlights its increasing significance to Coláiste Naomh Eoin and the extended community of Inis Meáin. The race has become a vital part of our social calendar and it is a crucial annual gathering for the island. We always have a famous face open the race whom in the past have included Sonia O Sullivan, Pat Lam , Micheal O’Muircheartaigh, and Marty Morrissey to name a few. It is humbling to compare the growth of the race and the photographs from past events that tell their own vivid tales. We once had a memorable storm when the race was held in November, leading participants to spend an entire weekend on the island, adding to the adventure and camaraderie. The race also sparked a wonderful love story between a lovely couple from Dublin, who met here at the race; it was love at first sight as their story unfolded beautifully with a wedding, and now they return annually with their children to compete in the race. The Inis Iron Meáin Road Race has something for everyone, young and old, those who thrive on the competitive challenge of participating to those who set personal goals while enjoying the scenic beauty and tranquillity of Inis Meáin. Our legendary post race community barbecue tops off the day, as everyone exchanges their race tales in a friendly atmosphere.”

The race has inspired many others, leading to the creation of similar events in other communities, a testament to its profound impact on participants and community.

Inis Iron Meáin caters for runners of all levels. Runners and spectators alike will get the true island experience in each of the 5k, 10k or the more challenging 12k race. The longer run includes a breathtaking route along the island’s beautiful coast, Ceann Gainnimh. A post-race celebration will include a community barbecue, which is often attended by notable personalities.
