WILD WEST RUN – SAT 1 MARCH, 2014 Due to the very positive reaction from runners after this year’s WILD WEST RUN, the race on SAT 1 MARCH, 2014 will follow the same circuit – the race will start at Moll’s Gap and continue through the Black Valley onwards towards Lord Brandon’s Cottage and Killarney’s Upper Lake – from here runners will continue towards Galway’s Bridge using ‘the Kerry Way’ all the way back to Kenmare. The entire route is in an area of OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY. This route is suitable for competitors of all abilities.
2014 RACE DETAILS LOCATION – KERRY – Moll’s Gap to Kenmare DISTANCE – 15M RACE HEADQUARTERS – KENMARE PRE-RACE ASSEMBLY POINT – MOLLS GAP COACH PARK – 10 30AM OFFICIAL RACE START TIME – 11am OFFICIAL RACE START POINT – 1 mile approx from Molls Gap on descent into Black Valley. Runners will be escorted here on foot from Assembly Point by Marshalls
RACE REGISTRATION/GOODY BAG COLLECTION KENMARE VILLAGE 07 30 – 09 30 on race morning. Location details of RACE HQ to follow. Race pack will contain race number, ‘tech tees’, gels etc ALL COMPETITORS SHOULD REGISTER IN KENMARE AT THIS TIME – INCLUDING THOSE WHO INTEND TO TRAVEL TO MOLLS GAP BY THEIR OWN MEANS. 09 45AM – Runners needing coach will be transferred by coach from Race HQ in Kenmare. Only those who have prepaid for this option will be permitted on coaches. 10 45AM – Runners will be escorted on foot to OFFICIAL RACE START POINT which is approx 1m from Molls Gap Coach Park. EXCESS RUNNING GEAR – Runners should put all excess gear in a clearly marked bag and leave on coaches. These will be then brought back to Kenmare Race HQ for post race collection. No valuables. ROUTE – FROM RACE START POINT RUNNERS WILL CONTINUE VIA COUNTRY ROADS TO THE BLACK VALLEY, LORD BRANDON’S COTTAGE – ALONG THE WESTERN SHORE OF KILLARNEY’S UPPER LAKE EVENTUALLY EMERGING AT LADIES VIEW. HERE YOU WILL BE ON THE ‘RING OF KERRY’ FOR ABOUT 100m. RUNNERS ARE ADVISED TO BE ESPECIALLY VIGILANT AT THIS POINT AND TO LISTEN TO OUR SAFETY MARSHALLS. AT THIS POINT IT WILL EFFECTIVELY BE ‘TRAIL’ ALL THE WAY TO KENMARE. THUS APPROX 60% TRAIL / 40% COUNTRY ROADS (ALMOST NO TRAFFIC) WATER AND REFUSE STATIONS PROVIDED. Trail shoes advisable though not essential FINISH – 1MILE NORTH OF KENMARE VILLAGE We wanted to keep the distance at 13.1m but, such is the nature of the rural roads and terrain, we feel this is the best option for a safe, yet challenging event. Also, the use of some ‘tarmac’ surfaces and longer ‘downhill’ stretches should ease the extra burden of 1.9miles SAFETY AND DIRECTIONAL MARSHALLS – All along the route MEDICAL TEAM – Galway’s Bridge WATER AND REFUSE STATIONS – Lord Brandon’s Cottage / Galway’s Bridge PRIZES – Excellent!!!!!
