Steve Jones the athlete and former world marathon record holder watching the closing race in the Galway 5K Series on Tuesday night Steve Jones the athlete and former world marathon record holder was in
town tonight watching the closing race in the Galway 5K Series held in
Tuam. With 800 people taking part in the popular 6 race series Steve
got to view the Galway running community out in fores and was
impressed by the quality and dedication of the field.
He won the London Marathon in spring 1985 in 2:08:16. In October 1985 he achieved his career best marathon time of 2:07:13 in winning the Chicago Marathon, at that time only one second slower than the world record run by Carlos Lopes at the Rotterdam Marathon earlier that same year. This time remains the fastest of any British runner. He was at hand to launch the Great Race Galway and commented that the running action in Ireland and Galway is second to none and that we have a great thing going here when 800 Galwegins will make there way out to Tuam on the Tuesday of a bank Holiday weekend and race a 5K at 8 at night.
What a positive way to start the week! The 5Km series is a great way to gradually gain fitness over the 6 weeks and show what you can do for 5K. Now that the series is over why not get a new target race of the Great Race Galway to see what you can do for the 10Km.
The race starts with one lap of the racecourse and then proceeds to fast country roads for 8k and a final lap of the course for a grandstand finish! Entries are €24 or €20 for AAI members. Log onto www.greatracegalway.ie for more information.
