from Athletcis Northern Ireland The village of Dromore in County Tyrone is set to host a remarkable event in June this year to raise funds for two local charities. The Spirit of Paul McGirr and The Fields of Life have decided to pool their resources and their collective fund raising experiences to stage a 10K run that will be based in the County Tyrone village, on Saturday 13th June 2009.
Northern Ireland football star Kyle Lafferty who currently plays for Scottish Premier League side Rangers has already pledged his support for the inaugural event. The striker has encouraged runners of all abilities to register early to take part in what should be an exciting and fun day out for all the family.
Aid work in Africa is central to both these charities, with volunteers from across the North spending time in Uganda and Zambia working on projects such as building schools and medical clinics. The two charities have raised thousands of pounds and built almost 100 schools across Africa. Launching the new 10K run the charities are hoping to raise a substantial amount of money to further aid these ongoing projects.
This event will be a huge boost to the two local charities and to the town itself. The organisers are hoping to attract almost 700 runners to the streets of Dromore and a lot of preparation has gone into organising the event. The route has been carefully thought out and is based on the shape of a four leaf clover comprising of four loops and will also take in the new Dromore Riverside Walk which will be opened on the same day. Registration for the race costs £10 and all the money will go directly to the local charities.
Clare McCoy, Marketing Manager for Athletics NI, also welcomed this new event in the local sporting calendar:
“2009 is experiencing a running boom with road races seeing a huge surge in numbers and it is fantastic to see a cross community 10K which caters for those in the Tyrone area while also raising funds for two very worthwhile charities”.
