Dundrum South Dublin Athletic Club is proud to present Marathon Talk 26.2. Whether you’re thinking of doing your first Marathon or looking for tips on how to improve your last Marathon time, this talk should not be missed by anyone interested in Marathon Running. The speakers will enlighten you on the many aspects of endurance running, retelling their experiences in a most practical way during this unusual assembly of athletes from Novice, Experienced & Elite at the distance. Open your eyes to the discipline of endurance running, the Training, the Wall and the Myths associated with the King of all racing distances that is “The Marathon”. Look into the abyss and begin to understand the fascination that people have with endurance running and in particular the Marathon. The evening’s program is designed specifically for those thinking of attempting their first Marathon and those trying to improve their time toward the elusive sub 3hr mark.
Elite Marathoner Linda Byrne (DSDAC)
Current National Marathon Champion 2.36.21 (PB) 31/10/2011.
Irish Olympic Marathon Qualifier London 2012.
Current National 10km Champion 33.49 (PB) 15/04/12
Linda will discuss her training patterns and experience in running & winning the Irish National Marathon & 10km Championships last & this year.
Strength & Conditioning Peter Mathews (DSDAC)
Current British & Irish Cross Country Master’s Champion, 8 National title’s for cross country & track National Senior 3 Time Cross Country Champion.
Pete is a fulltime Strength & Conditioning Coach & Sports Massage Therapist, specialising in Strength Training & Injury prevention for Runners. Based in South Dublin he works with Novice to Elite Runners helping them to achieve their goals. He will discuss the benefits of strength, conditioning & massage for long distance runners, he will give advise on self maintenance of muscles and core strength.
1st Timer Marathoner Annette Kehoe (DSDAC)
First Marathon outing in DCM 2011. 4.06.21 (F45),
3rd F40 Connemara International ½ Marathon 2012.
Annette will share her 1st time experiences of doing DCM in 2011. She will chat about her journey from once she decided to do the Marathon, organising her training slots while working & raising a family. Imparting her experiences of the training, what was hard, what was easy, what she’s planning to do differently this year.
A Word from the Pacer, Fergal McDonnell
Experienced Marathon, Triathlon, Ultra & IronMan® Campaigner, DCM Pacer. International Marathon Pacer Fergal has travelled the world running, swimming, cycling, these epic events have made him a hardened participant at the endurance discipline. Pain is your friend according to Fergal !!!!! “You’ve just got to accept it when it comes a callin’ !!!”. Pacing the 4.30 DCM group the last few years he will relate to us the key to pacing your Marathon, what wins and what bins in terms of pacing. He will introduce you to the famous “WALL”.
Marathon Training Schedules, Declan Ryan (DSDAC Coach)
Having completed a number of Marathons himself and coaching the Adult Meet & Train group in DSD, Declan will discuss practical training schedules for the Novice & Improver. He will share his observations of coaching runners towards the Marathon and the mistakes himself and others typically have made with their training program.
Followed by Questions & Answers session with the speakers.
