The Irish Injured Jockeys Fund has announced details for the inaugural ‘Jog for Jockeys 5k’ run which will take place at noon on Sunday 21st August 2011 on 5 different racecourses simultaneously at Cork Racecourse, Down Royal Racecourse, Galway Racecourse, Leopardstown Racecourse & Naas Racecourse.

This is the first time a run like this has been organised for the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund. Tracy Piggott, Michael Kinane, Ruby Walsh and Hector Ó hEochagáin have all pledged their support and will all be in action on the day along with many other celebrities and top Jockeys. The Jockeys Accident Fund was set up for the benefit of Jockeys and Apprentices injured either in races or in the schooling of horses.

The run is open to everyone with an entry fee of €25, pre-register at www.jogforjockeys.ie and proceeds go to the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund. All the family are welcome and children are free.

There are prizes for the first 3 finishers in both the male and female category at each racecourse and all registered participants will receive an official T-shirt, goody bag and timing chip.

Dr Adrian McGoldrick, Turf Club Senior Medical Officer said:- “By supporting Jog for Jockeys’, you are supporting the bravest men and women in Irish sport. Every time they mount a horse to provide you and I with the enjoyment – the buzz and thrill – we all get from racing, they are putting their bodies on the line. What other sportsperson has a minimum of two ambulances and a doctor travelling behind them as they participate? Our riders travel at 35-40 miles per hour on a half ton of horsepower with the risk of falling at anytime from a height of three metres. Not only do they need your support – THEY DESERVE IT”

Denis Egan, on behalf of the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund said:- “Join in the fun and run, jog or walk 5k at one of the five racecourses. This is for a deserving cause: a couple of laps of a racecourse will help you appreciate the athletic ability of our jockeys.”

Mike Todd, Maanager of Down Royal Racecourse said: – “We are delighted to be hosting one of the five Jog for Jockeys – 5k runs. Running and fitness have become hugely popular in recent times and we hope to have a good turn out of both running and racing fans on the day. Children are free and families are welcome on the day to either cheer on or to participate. All the racecourses are very picturesque so it will be an enjoyable day for all to get some fresh air and exercise all for a good cause”.
