Irish Youth Open Swimming Championships – Day 1 Update

0

International Fair at National Aquatic Centre The Irish Youth Open Swimming Championships 2010 has attracted International teams from South Africa, France, Scotland and Egypt this year, and got underway at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin today.

One of the highlights of day one was the Men’s 200m freestyle 16 & under age category, which produced some very impressive results. The race was won by Bangor’s Jordan Sloan in 1.54.91 and close on his heels was Kyle Stolk from the NAC swim club (1.55.31). Not long after the 200m freestyle was over, Sloan was back in the pool to win the 16 & under 100m backstroke in another notable time – 1.01.23.

Olympian Aisling Cooney, who missed out on qualification for this summer’s European Championships (August) produced a strong swim in the 100m backstroke (1.02.79) just over a half second off her all time best.

Dubliner Karl Burdis, who has recently returned home from the University of Minnesota and started training full time at Swim Ireland’s NAC High Performance Centre had stiff competition from some of the visiting French swimmers in the 100m backstroke, as well as from Kilkenny’s Colm Dowling who won the Irish title in 59.41. Second place went to Burdis in 59.42 and third went to William Ensor, Westwood (1.00.55).

National titles were awarded to the top three Irish in each event, with commemorative tokens being awarded to the visiting swimmers. The four day meet which runs from Thursday 22nd – Sunday 25th July is the final National domestic meet of the summer and will feature members of the European Senior squad over the course of the four days, including Andrew Bree, Clare Dawson and Grainne Murphy.
