from the Athletics Association of Ireland 1st Munster Regional Squad session of the 2010-2011 season took place at Cork IT on Saturday with nice weather conditions apart from some showers of rain. Over 130 athletes along with parents and personal coaches turned out for a great 1st session.
The athletes broke into individual event groups with the middle distance athletes going through a light ‘pre-competition’ routine the day before the Munster Cross-Country championships with Steven Macklin and also were shown some motivational videos. The young walkers were delighted to be coached by Robert Heffernan, Yvonne Cassin and Frank Lynch who were impressed with the high standard and dedication of the walkers present.
The hurdlers were put through their paces by Chris Regan in a fun session, with Liam Reilly coaching the talented bunch of sprinters. Our throws coaches were as enthusiastic as ever with the athletes having great technical sessions with Jerry Horgan Discus, John Sheehan Javelin, Tim O Connor Shot Putt and Brian & Rachel Akers Hammer.
Finally the jumpers were looked after by Jacqui Freyne Long Jump/Triple Jump and Martin O Grady High Jump. Eamon Flanagan as always put the Pole Vaulters through their paces in a very enjoyable session. Three time olympian Robert Heffernan was the guest speaker for the day and he proved to be a major hit with the athletes. Everybody headed off home motivated and looking forward to the next session in UL on Saturday 4th December with registration at 10.15am sharp.
A special thanks to the parents and personal coaches who attended and added to the success of the day. For more infomation on the Munster Squad contact RDO Steven Macklin 0876335565 or e-mail steven@athleticsireland.ie.
