GALWAY CITY HARRIERS
CLUB PROFILE
Galway City Harriers is an athletics club based in Galway city, Ireland, catering for senior and juvenile athletes. Founded in 1899, GCH has been to the forefront of athletics in Ireland throughout the 20th century and many famous athletes have represented both club and country in track and field, cross-country and road competitions.
In the early 1990s the club began to develop a strong juvenile section. The development was driven by PJ Coyle and Oliver Geraghty and today, working with a group of dedicated parents and coaches, there are now 200 juvenile members. Oliver and PJ continue to lead our Juvenile athletes.
At a Senior level our members include a number of national and international champions.
More recently our club is adapting to changing times in sports participation. The vast majority of our membership consists of true amateurs who run together regularly, occasionally test themselves in a race, and delight when our serious athletes reap the rewards of the hard life of elite performance.

Try before you buy!
We welcome all levels of runner at GCH. We encourage everyone who is interested in joining us to come along and see how we operate and participate in a few of our sessions before committing themselves to joining. If you’re interested why not come along to the Monday evening session – see training page for details. This is a good way to get to meet people from the club.
Am I good enough to come along?
Monday evening run is 8 to 9 miles at 8 min. approx per mile.
If you are an absolute beginner (just started or never having run before)then you should come along to our Fit4Life sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 7pm Westside Library Carpark on Seamus Quirke Road. Absolute beginners are only taken at certain times in the year so please ring Fit4Life Leader Bernie Kelly 087-7504066 before you come along. We will be able to give you a starting programme which will get you to a basic level from which you will be able to join in the Monday session.
If you fall in between the above categories then come along and we’ll help you get up to running with us.
Most runners coming along for the first time at the club have the expectation that they will be too slow, too old, too fat or just generally not up to joining a running club. In virtually all cases this is untrue. We are beginning to work at dispelling the belief that all running clubs are just for elite runners. We have a wide range of ages (18 to 65), speeds, shapes and we have a 60:40 male:female split.
If you like us, join in the fun, and feel the benefit
When you decide to join, you can do so by filling in the membership application form attached below. We hope that you will start to enjoy the benefits of our regular club runs.
