Ferrycarrig 5 Five Mile Road Race, 12 1 2014

0

The Ferrycarrig “5” and Crossabeg/ Ballymurn Community Centre. The second running of the Ferrycarrig 5 Five Mile Road Race will take place on Sunday 12 January 2014 at 1.00PM. The event, which in its inaugural Year attracted 320 runners and walkers is set to be even better this time around.
The target number of runners has been initially set at 350 for 2014 although we expect to exceed this number. The race is also open to walkers and we expect some 50 additional people to walk the course. We are offering a substantial prize list. Runners will benefit from a chip timing system and will each receive a race memento, a goody bag and full refreshments afterwards.

The course is a good one and proved very popular last year. The distance has been accurately measured and has gained Athletics Association of Ireland (AAI) registration.

We offer a well supervised course, a professionally run race and plenty of off road parking at the race headquarters which is equipped with full changing facilities.

Entry is available now at www.runireland.com or by application to ferrycarrig5@gmail.com for an entry form.

The beneficiary of all funds raised by the race is Crossabeg/ Ballymurn Community Centre. The facilities at the Centre include two full sized GAA pitches, one floodlit soccer pitch, a grass 400m running track and a 700m walking/ running track. The 700m track is also floodlit. The facilities are used by the local GAA, soccer and athletics clubs. Individuals from the Parish and beyond use the Centre, particularly the tracks. In these days of increasingly dangerous roads the Centre gives an “off road” option for people wanting a walk, jog or run. The next phase of the development of the Centre is the construction of a pavilion on the site with facilities suitable for the Centre.
The achievement of getting the Centre to where it is today is admirable in itself and to keep it maintained is another accomplishment. Bringing it on to the next phase is the new challenge that now faces the Committee. Fundraising can be difficult at the best of times and in the current environment is particularly taxing.
Last year’s race was very popular and many comments were made to us afterwards, exclusively positive in nature. Following are some of them:

•“Great run yesterday, great course and very well organised. Refreshments afterwards were top class. Well done to everyone involved”.
•“Great race today committee, well done to all involved, great location, sandwiches were lovely and so well presented!!! Looking forward to next year already. Great work by all, great race, great marshalling, great food, same place same time next year”
•“A big congrats on a fantastic run today. Well done to all involved in organising the event, everything was perfect from a runners point. All your hard work paid off :-). Here’s to next year!!”
•“Very well organised. Great marshalling, good atmosphere, changing facilities with hot showers and LOVELY post-race food and drink. Well done, we’ll be back with a bigger contingent next year.”
•“I think that this race has a big future and is worth travelling for (I came from Dublin)”
•Just a quick email to tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed your event. Lovely flat course and a great atmosphere too. Should consider making it an annual thing?

These are just an extract from the some 50 or so comments we had via email, our facebook page and posted on boards.ie from participants and athletic clubs.

We have a full safety policy in place for the race and between our own insurance and that provided by the AAI licence, all required angles are covered.

Prizes are on offer to the general race winners, higher places and veterans categories. There are team and junior prizes and the full list is available to both female and male participants. Spot prizes are also available for which all participants, including walkers, are eligible.
