Malcolm Gamble Conquers 100 miles of Wild Connemara The Connemara 100 mile road race took place this weekend, starting in Clifden at 6am on Saturday. Fifteen people started the race and twelve completed the full 100 miles. The course took in the most scenic parts of Connemara from Clifden, through Letterfrack, Lettergeish, Lough Inagh, Maam Cross, Leenane, Roundstone and Ballyconneely and finished back in Clifden.
Mens winner Malcolm Gamble from Australia completed in a time of 15 hours 58 minutes. First woman home was Catherine Guthrie from Kilkenny in a time of 22 hours and 5 minutes. The last finishers crossed the line this morning (Sunday) at 6:31 – that’s 24 and a half hours running.
Very tough conditions with heavy winds and rain throughout the race but lots of smiles and tears of achievement at the Finish in Clifden and the presentations in the Clifden Station House Hotel who sponsor the event.
A special recognition award was presented to Sebastien Locteau from Sports Ireland for his contribution to the race over the years and in recognition of his personal bravery in overcoming a traumatic injury many years ago and continuing to participate actively in sport both as a participant and as a coach.
