
from Jeremy Lyon Kerry club Farranfore Maine Valley had a golden day at the Woodies DIY National Junior Indoor Championship in Nenagh on Saturday. A walk double by Emma and Niall Prendiville in the first two events was later added to by a gold in the Men’s shot putt by Daniel Clifford. Not to be undone by her Kerry counterparts, promising thrower Claire Fitzgerald had a comfortable win in the women’s Shot with a putt of 12.87 and thus ensuring a clean sweep of walks and shot putt by the kingdom athletes. Elsewhere, Ferrybank’s Niamh Whelan shook off a recent bout of flu over Christmas to record a double over the 60 and 200. The classy Ciara Everard (KCH) won impressively with a 2:11 in the women’s 800 while fellow world junior competitor Sandra Lawlor showed her competitive instinct with a commanding win in the women’s 60m hurdles. A new national junior record was the reward for Westport’s Caoimhe King where she was just 3cm short of the impressive 12m mark in the women’s triple jump.
Coming from the hurdling nursery in Leevale that has delivered a world champion in recent years, Edmond O’ Halloran showed great promise with a clear win in the men’s hurdles in 8.32. Barry Pender led a good day for St Abbans with a brilliant 2.10 in winning the men’s high jump with club mate Francis Egan breaking the 14m mark to win the triple jump.
