None A crowd of about 120 competitors turned out to take part in the 2nd Clifden Lifeboat 10k race on sunday 13th September 2009.
Entries came from all over county Galway, as well as Mayo, Cork, Kildare, Dublin, Tyrone as well as 2 from the USA.
The weather was very different from last year, with clear blue skies. This made a challenging course, harder as the temperatures were up into the 20’s C by race start at 2pm.
However this did not put off Eoin Mullan from Tyrone (37.10) and Keith White (37.36) who not only came in 1st and 2nd but also bet last year’s best time of 38.51 mins. Annette Keane was the 1st woman in (48.33) and local youths also did great time with Liam De coucey coming in first in the under 18’s (43.54) and Colm Coneys who at only 12 years of age clocked in at 54.39.
The race is organised to raise funds for the Clifden lifeboat and is held close to the anniversary of a tragic event, when the MVF St oliver sank in bad weather on the 17th September 2004, claiming the lifes of 4 local fishermen, including Mikey Mullen, who was only 18yrs old, and had only been at sea for 6 months at the time. It is organised by Mikey’s mother, Laurance, as a tribute to him and in memory of all other local fishermen who have died at sea over the years.
Many thanks to all who took part, those who came out on the day to support them, and everyone who helped out or sponsored it in any way.
