from Donore Harriers The weekend provided a number of competitions for Donore athletes at various levels and disciplines. Greenmount Campus in County Antrim was the setting for the Antrim IAAF International XC of 2010.
Staged on Saturday 23rd and incorporating the Celtic International XC three Donore athletes travelled North to take part. Both Fiona Mahon and Anne Curley took part in the Senior Ladies and finished 32nd and 44th respectively. John Travers hoping to make amends for missing out on the recent Euro Championships had a good run although disappointed with his 5th place finish in the Men’s under 20 race in a time of 18.02.
Saturday also saw the staging of the Eircom cross-country races at Cherryfield Park, Templeogue where some Donore athletes took part in the Women’s 2 mile and Men’s 5 mile. Well done to Feargal, Joe (2nd M70), Florrie 9th (1st W35), Samantha 10th, Karen McLoughlin, Jennifer and Anne Woodlock (1st W70).
At the Meet & Train 3rd round in Swords there was great runs from Aoife 3rd, Maura 8th, Ruth 9th, Bridget 14th, Mary M 19th, Claire 20th, Patricia 27th, Cathy 35th, Joan 42nd, Sue 71st and Niamh 83rd.
The National Indoors for Masters were held on Sunday in Nenagh and proved very fruitful for both Rob Bruce Brand and Simon Meyler. Rob and Simon battled for the title for men’s over 40 winner in the 800 metres. In the end Rob proved to be the stronger of the two taking the gold medal in 2.08 with Simon leading home the rest of the field in 2nd place in 2.09. Simon was to take another silver medal later in the over 40’s 1500 metres but not before they both tried there hands (or should I say legs?) at the 400 metres in which Rob finished 4th and Simon 6th. Congratulations to them both and I’m sure they’ll be eager to do battle again next week in Nenagh at the Leinster indoor championships
