DSD Adult Meet & Train head for Connemarathon

0

from www.dsdac.com The newly formed group within DSD are aiming for the Connemara International Marathon on Sunday 10/04/2011. Entry numbers are restricted and are usually gone by mid December each year this has been the case over the last few years, so book it now if you’re interested.

Entrants have the choice of a Half, Full or Ultra Marathon, 13.1, 26.2 or 39.3 miles respectively. DSD AM&T will commence training for this event in early December 10’ and are planning on identifying a 10km and Half Marathon race during the early part of 2011 as sharpeners for the Connemarathon event.

The actual event weekend will be scheduled loosely as follows; We will car pool and travel down on the Saturday 09/04/2011 afternoon hitting Galway City and into Pre Race Registration in one of the main hotels in the city by about 4pm. We then head out to the B&B in Oughterard go out for a little 2 mile jog. Then heading out for a bite to eat in the evening and a little dram to settle the nerves. Usually in bed for 11-12. Early start on the Sunday morning 7.30 on the bus for those doing the Marathon and 9.30 for those doing the ½. Bus is about 500mts from the B&B so it’s handy. We usually leave our gear in the B&B and head back there after the race by about 3pm, grab showers and on the road back to Dublin between 4-5pm. Home with your shining new medal in the bosom of your loved ones by 7-8pm Sunday evening.

It’s a bit like a religious retreat with a bit of running thrown in along the way, cause you’ll be bleedin’ pray your socks off climbing the “Hell of the West” at mile 21-23 (9-11), and once you get to the top you’ll think you’re nearly home and peg it down the hill with what energy you have left only to discover you’ve 1.5miles of flat road still to go when it looked so near from the top of the hill. Again you will start praying that your little body lasts you until then and if you’ve paced this wrong there’ll be loads and loads of people pouring past you, hard lessons from one who’s made the mistakes.

Welcome to Connemara where the only spectators on the course are the sheep at the side of the road.

So if you think you’d like to give it a go register yourself on www.connemarathon.com

Other Costs: Sharing Petrol Costs, B&B, evening meal on Saturday evening.

Of course you are also expected to join DSD as a member (Eur85.00) if you’re going to do the training with us and also take part.

Regards,

Declan Ryan (DSD)
