
from A.A.I In the Celtic Cup in Cardiff today there were a number of notable performances by Irish athletes. Rose-Anne Galligan of Newbridge AC won the Women’s 1500m in 4.17.05 minutes outside the qualification for the World Indoor Championships of 4.15 minutes. Kerry Harty (Newcastle AC) finished second in 4.26 minutes.
In the sprint events Ailis McSweeney (Leevale AC) had another solid performance winning the Women’s 60m in 7.48 seconds. Jo Patterson (Ballymena & Antrim AC) won the Women’s 400m in 55.21 seconds.
Barry Pender of St. Abban’s AC won the Men’s High Jump in 2.10m while Pamela Hughes (Westport AC) won the Women’s High Jump in 1.74m. Mary McLoone had a winning leap of 5.80m in the Women’s Long Jump.
Mark English of Letterkenny AC had an exceptional run to win the Junior Men’s 800m in a personal best of 1.50.67. This time is also inside the qualifying standard of 1.51.00 for the World Junior Track and Field Championships that will take place in Canada later this year.
There were also several personal bests achieved by a number of athletes by a team was made up of some experienced athletes but was largely a developmental team.
