Derval O’Rourke of Leevale AC produced a solid win over the 60m Hurdles at the UK Indoor Championships in Sheffield today
O’Rourke produced a seasonal best of 8.11 seconds to win in convincing style from Gemma Bennett in 8.20 seconds. The Cork Women had easily qualified for the final running 8.22 seconds, to win her heat.
Kelly Proper of Ferrybank AC was also in action and continued her preparations for the World Indoor Championships in Doha with a win the Long Jump. Proper produced her winning leap of 6.48m in her final jump to beat Amy Woodman’s jump of 6.20m.
Hazel Murphy from DSD AC was involved in an exciting 3000m race yesterday. Murphy produced a strong finish to outsprint Gemma Turtle for a superb win. Her time of 9:02.81 minutes is a Personal Best and inside the qualifying standard for the World Indoor championships in Doha. Deirdre Byrne of Sli Chualann finished down the field in seventh in 9.22.61 minutes.
Three Irish women made yesterday’s 60m Women’s Final. Clare Brady (Celbridge AC) finished fourth in 7.40 seconds with Ferrybank’s Niamh Whelan finishing fifth in 7.52 seconds. Ailis McSweeney was disqualified for a false start after running 7.50 seconds in the semi-final to make the final. Whelan also lined up in the 200m and finished third the final in a new Personal Indoor Best of 23.86 seconds.
Elsewhere Paul Quirke from Crusaders AC improved on his Irish U23 Record that he set last week with a threw 17.56m at the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas yesterday. This threw brings him closer to his father’s Paul’s Irish record of 18.07m set in 1991.
David McCarthy, Le Cheile AC put his performance at the Woodie’s DIY Senior Indoor Championships last weekend behind him when he won the 800m in Valencia yesterday in a time of 1:49.57 minutes.
