High Altitude Training Centre (HATC), Iten,. Kenya
Some people go and laze by a pool on their holidays but not TriCamp’s very own Tony Griffin. No too relaxing. Instead he headed off to 8000ft above sea level to visit the much renowned High Altitude Training Centre run by the marathon phenomenon Lorna Kilplagat. Here he tells us about the experience and what it will mean to TriCamps 2010.
The first thing to realise about running at almost four times the height of Ireland’s highest mountain is that you will be taught lessons. I had met Lorna in a physio clinic in the University of Limerick, Ireland and she invited us over to visit. Four flights later we stood on her doorstep on the edge of the Rift Valley in Kenya ready to experience all she had to offer first hand. And what an experience it was!
The HATC is a facility that prepares young girls for careers in both Ivy League schools and on the running tracks of the world. These are girls to whom Lorna gives a chance to go far beyond what seems possible. From a Kenyan village to the tartan tracks of London, Paris and New York.
Each morning starts at 6am with a knock on the door and an order rather than an invitation, “Shall we run”. Lorna is recovering from a slight injury so she takes it “Polee Polee”, “Slow Slow”. I get dropped after 3 k and Lorna is showered and eating breakfast when we arrive at the finish line.
This was a fantastic experience and one that I know will add to what it is we are offering people through TriCamps 2010 in take place in Portlaoise, Ireland on the 16th and 17th of January and in Monto Gordo, Portugal from January 26th to February 4th. As the Kenya’s say “Train Hard Win Easy”.
So until next time stay well and see www.tricamps.ie for more information on how to sign up for our last few remaining places at TriCamps 2010 which take place in Portlaoise, Ireland on the 16th and 17th of January and in Monto Gordo, Portugal from January 26th to February 4th.
