from RTE Sport news Irish athletes enjoyed a superb weekend with David Gillick and Kelly Proper delivering winning performance on the European Indoor circuit. Gillick, the reigning 400m European indoor champion, opened his season with a brilliant victory in a world-leading time of 46.18seconds in Dusseldorf on Friday.

The Dubliner man easily held off the challenges of Italy’s Claudio Licciardello and American Jamaal Torrance, who clocked 46.57secs and 47.11secs respectively.

The 25-year-old’s performance will boost his confidence as he chases a third successive European title in Turin next month.

Meanwhile, Kelly Proper claimed Long Jump honours in Sheffield on Saturday.

The Ferrybank AC star broke her own Irish record with a leap of 6.44m, with Amy Woodman second and Jade Johnson third.

Separately, Mary Cullen broke Sonia O’Sullivan’s 3,000m indoor Irish Record with a run of 8.43.74 at the Valentine Invitation Meet in Boston on Friday night.

The time places Cullen third in the IAAF World Top List. Cullen, who is included in the squad for the European Indoor championships in Turin, had already come within a second of Sonia O’Sullivan’s Irish 5,000m record in Boston last weekend.
