– National team competition introduced into long-distance mountain challenge David McCarthy finished an impressive second to Mohamed Khadraoui in the North East regional cross country champiosnhips at Van Cortlandt Park in New York yesterday. Covering the 10k distance in 31:13 he was just two seconds adrift of the winner, while Andrew Ledwith was fifth a further 15 seconds back. The US college cross country season concludes with the NCAA championships in Terre Haute Indiana tomorrow week.

At Gateshead Gareth Turnbull was involved in a blanket finish to the one mile race to finish third.
Mary Cullen won the New England Cross Country Championships in Franklin Park in Boston last Sunday in 19:39 for 6k, a new course record. Read Runners World interview

National team competition introduced into long-distance mountain challenge
The World Mountain Running Association has introduced a team competition into its annual World Long Distance Challenge. The 2009 event is being held in Austria on 10th October over a full marathon distance. The first half of the race is on flat ground with the first climb starting at around 22 km and the final steep climb over the last three km. Jonathan Wyatt has the course record at just over three hours. International teams will comprise up to five athletes with three to score.
