Mayo AC’s 10th Annual Road Race League sponsored by C&C Cellular ends on a high note with the Westport 5k on Sunday December 28th. The event this year is organised by Mayo AC in association with Mayo Sport Partnership. As well as being a competitive event attracting runners from all over the West and beyond, it will also be part of the Fit4Life programme whose aim is to attract people of all ages into the sport of running/jogging for fitness and enjoyment. This race comes at the end of both another very successful Race League and year for the club. Personal bests, national team and individual medals were won on track, field and road. Newcomers, seniors and veterans took full advantage of the expanded league containing a record nine races. The eight races so far have been well attended and hotly contested.

For the League Series, points are awarded to the first 25 men and women finishers, with the total points from an individual’s best six races counting towards prizes.
John Byrne and Mary Gleeson have both been in excellent form all year and are in unassailable positions as leaders of the men’s and women’s sections. However, the outcome to all the other places and category prizes will be resolved after this race.
The Westport 5k race will start at 2pm.
The flat out-‘n-back course starts at St Mary’s Crescent, goes through the historic Westport House Grounds, out to the triangle of fresh sea air at the Harbour, a good opportunity to check out the opposition, and back though the Grounds to the finish at New Road. The organisers wish to acknowledge the assistance of the Browne Family of Westport House.

The prize structure for Westport 5k:
Senior: first 3 men, first 3 women,
first three 040, 050 (men), and 035, 045 (women)
first three junior men and women (u19 on race day).

There has been a lot of interest to date, and it looks like being the biggest Westport 5k field so far. You can run, walk, or jog! So head on over to Westport and end the year on an athletic high!
Entry fee €10. Registration from 12.30 @ Sports Centre beside the track just off Newport Road.
