IMRA Winners 2000-2008
(Rene Borg)

I have put together a document showing the winners in all Leagues and Championships since 2000.

You can find the document here

It’s very much still a work in progress even though we now have most winners registered.

For any errors, omissions, and other comments, we’d be delighted to hear from past winners and others who remember the days.

It would be great if we can get all details together so we can honour the winners of past years appropriately.

If anyone has information on the years 1980-1999, these will be much appreciated too.

Leinster League Team Competition
(Rene Borg)

The Leinster League completed yesterday and with it many internal competitions, including the Team Competition.

Overall score can be seen here

More LL wrap-up to follow next week.

END RESULT

Rathfarnham WSAF brushed off all challengers once again and were undisputed champions of the Men’s Leinster League Team Competition just as they had claimed the Irish Club Championship week’s earlier.

Behind them four teams fought a tight battle for the honours: local men Sli Cualann, the orienteers of Setanta, tradition-steeped Crusaders, and the young guns of UCD.

In the end, slow starters from Crusaders left it too late to claim a place on the podium, Sli Cualann held on firm to the Silver and Setanta took the Bronze, but it wasn’t all in vain as the crusading Winter League champions narrowly defended 4th position from UCD on the very last day.

The young teams of UCD and Crusaders will look forward to challenging the more established top-3 in the coming season, but for Setanta it was business as usual with their a 2nd consecutive Silver medal. UCD may view it as a step down from their Bronze medals last year, while Sli Cualann improved from 5th and Crusaders from 7th.

A good bit behind the top-5 Fingal took 7th, and new teams TeaM BCD and Tumblewoods 7th and 8th. The other Rathfarnham club, Sportsworld, finished 9th. The strong orienteers from GEN and established hill running Clonliffe did not complete five races, neither did the Unwilling Wanderers or Ajax who made up the bottom spot.

On the women’s Crusaders women proved that hegemony is not a word reserved only for Rathfarnham as they made

As the Leinster League concluded at the Sugarloaf yesterday, so did the team competition in which 13 male teams competed (9 completed the league) and 5 female teams (1 completed).

REVIEW – MEN

13 male teams competed this year, a small step back from the 14 who competed in 2007. Club runners were better represented than ever, though, and 9 teams completed the league whereas only 8 did so last year.

That a host of new teams have joined can be seen as wellknown clubs such as DFO, Raheny, and North Laois did not manage to finish any races this year as they had done in 2007.

Most teams relied on 3-5 scorers to win them their points (old names such as Crusaders AC, and Sportsworld and new team’s such as Team BCD and Tumbleweeds), while the largest team was Wicklow’s Sli Cualann with 9 different runners contributing. Winners Rathfarnham needed 6.

No team ran more races than 2nd placed Setanta (11 out of 12) while Team BCD sprung into existence midway and completed only the min. 5. Of the close-knit top-5, most teams were managed to string out at least 10 results.

REVIEW – WOMEN

The women’s league saw a very large number of Crusaders women participate, but unfortunately, these numbers weren’t quite matched by other clubs as only 5 teams contested the women’s competition and no other team managed the 5 minimum required to finish.

This was one down on last year’s 6 teams, as Rathfarnham’s women did not contest the Leinster League. They did, however, play a major part in the recent Irish Club Championships and we hope to see them back next year.

In general club runners dominated the top-20s and top-50s in most races, which may serve as a welcome encouragement for those runners who’ve toyed with the thought of improving their running by joining a club.

It also saw the formation of several “teams”, e.g. hill runners banding together in their own “autonomous” clubs, which only added to the competition and fun factor of this year’s competition.

CLUB AND INDIVIDUALS

Just as Rathfarnham and Crusaders took the men’s and women’s honours, so did their “captains” Barry Minnock and Aoife Joyce, so there’s something to be said about “leading the line”.

Rathfarnham WSAF won 8 of the 11 races (Barry Minnock 6, John Brooks 2) while Setanta took 2 (Eoin Keith) and Letterkenny 1 (James McFadden). One was one by unaffiliated Wicklow runner Will Powderly.

Among the women Crusaders won 5 (all Aoife Joyce), UCD won 4 (US student Erin Roberts), and while Rathfarnham, Sli Cualann and Clonliffe got one each (Anne Ormsby, Jenny McAuley and Mags Greenan).
