‘We launched our annual Triathlon as part of the original Volvo Galway stop over in 2009 and we are delighted that we have been accepted as part of the official line up again this year,’ comments Fintan Maher, ‘This will be our forth Annual Triathlon but there is just something special about the event when it coincides with the Volvo Ocean Race. Salthill will be buzzing. With the boats visible out in the bay, the promenade lined with stalls selling exotic foods and 300 people running into the waves with 100’s of supporters cheering from Blackrock – it’s the best of everything Galway has to offer and it’s all for a very good cause.’

This triathlon attracts top athletes from all over the country but is also ideal for people who are new to the sport. Last year there were over 15 teams, many of which were families – in one case three generations of one family took part.

The event starts in Salthill with a 750m swim followed by a 20K cycle to Furbo and back and finishes off with a 5K run along the promenade and raises funds for COPE Galway the local charity that provides services to the most isolated in society, including a refuge for women and children experiencing domestic violence, accommodation for homeless men and women and supports to enable older people to remain living in their own homes.
