Fit4life is becoming the new buzz word around the Kerry town of Castleisalnd thanks to Sheila Kirly who is running the programme every Wednesday night from 7pm to 8pm on the Riocht AC track and surrounding Town Park.
Regularly the numbers exceed 20, even 30 sometimes but the encouraging thing is that there seems to be new faces every week. According to Sheila, the success of the programme is down to the openness of the session, in that the vast majority of the people attending the programme have little or no experience in athletics or running/jogging and the group really enjoy the social aspect of training with people of a similar ability.
Although, little or no emphasis is put on competition some of the participants are looking forward to their first local 5km summer road race and some have even set their eyes on mini marathons and ½ marathons.

West Waterford Fit4Life Booming
West Waterford AC has always led the way when it comes to welcoming new members, and their innovative approach to developing the club has made it the largest Athletics club in the country with over 400 members.
Their model of promoting regular mass particpation events for all levels of fitness has placed the club at the centre of the community in and around Dungarvan and it’s catchment area. The club is a true focal point for all sections of the community and is a mecca for those who want to improve their health and fitness levels and have a good bit of craic while they’re at it.
Indeed, the West Waterford model was largely what inspired Athletics Ireland to develop the Fit4Life programme which is now proving immensely popular across the country, with close to 30 clubs now hosting a regular Fit4Life Meet ‘n’ Train session. Just like in Waterford, these sessions have proved highly successful in providing a focal point for recreational runners in the community and have infused the clubs with a new sense of vibrancy and a steady stream of new members.
West Waterford AC has itself embraced the Fit4Life concept and has an extensive list of fixtures for recreational runners as part of it’s ongoing Fit4Life league. The club organises over 50 events for recreational runners throughout the year. On top of this they have three training runs from Dungarvan Crystal Sports Center every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening with two groups of mainly ladies catered for, one at 5.30 and one at 6.30.
Indeed one of these groups have progressed to the point where they have all trained for and are running their first 10 mile road race this Sunday in Dungarvan. Congrats to all in West Waterford AC for their trojan work in building a great club and providing a wonderful service for their community.
