The inaugural Kilbride 10K was a great success with over 500 runners and walkers on the day despite the inclement weather. The original course had been changed as there was a chance of flooding from the local turlough and the freshly Jones wheel measured course was painstakingly marked out in the wet days beforehand ready for the signs to be put up on the morning of the race. Naturally, the day dawned with flooding all over the course and some great adventures in trying to find the markers. Despite this and the large numbers descending on the morning the race got away promptly at 13:00.

The course is one lap and the first 8K is flat or downhill but there is a nasty kick to the finish in the final 2K. Ultimately Mark Doyle from Run Worx escaped to post 35:04 ahead of the Mullingar Harriers duo of Martin Lyons (35:29) and Aidan Gorry (36:04). First lady home was Sarah Syron from Mayo AC in 40:57. In all there were 15 runners under the 40 minute barrier. Notable in the age groups were Tom Hunt from Mayo AC with 40:55 to win the 60-64 section and Maura Dervin of Mullingar Harriers with 42:44 to win the 45-50 section and 3rd overall Lady. All age group winners received trophies and/or certificates. The course was exactly 10,000M but an additional 20 metres was added at the final bend due to an ‘unscheduled alteration’ at the last minute so many apologies for that.

Part of the day was also the fastest Footballer Challenge for the GAA clubs to enter their fastest runners for the prize of football kit sponsored by George Bannon Sports of Roscommon. The Mens winner was Dwayne Flynn of Park GAA Mayo in 38:45 and the Ladies winner was Fiona Gettings from Ballymore GAA in 44:13.

The day was a resounding success in raising funds for the local charity which inspired the race and the Kilbride Community Centre provided a focal point with refreshments after the race and a mini expo. Many thanks to all involved with the stewarding, car parking, refreshments, registration, results and the myriad other roles which go unnoticed but contribute to a smooth and fun event.

We are hoping to have the event again next year and we look forward to your attendance again. The weather forecast is dry.
