MS Union Challenge 5k/10k Run/Jog/Walk
August Bank Holiday Monday 11am @ Gourmet Parlour Building in Collooney, Co. Sligo.
The 2016 MS UNION CHALLENGE is a 10k or 5k charity run/jog/walk which represents a unique opportunity for runners and walkers alike to experience the delights of Union Wood in Co. Sligo while at the same time supporting the MS North West Therapy Centre – a local charity which supports people with Multiple Sclerosis and other Neurological conditions. There are a number of trails throughout the woods, so this route incorporates parts of the Sligo Way, Union Rock Trail, and the Oakwood Trail. The highest point in the woods is 133’ however this route will only have a gradual climb to approximately 60’ with no steep inclines throughout the 10k. The starting point is the Gourmet Parlour Car Park in Collooney, with registration in the same building.
The initial 2k of the route is via the Union Road Business Park, which is a small tarmac road with an ideal running surface which could be used as a muscle stretcher or warmer for the more experienced runner. Then the route leads through a beautiful broadleaf forest of mixed terrain for approximately 2k which could be classified as a moderate grade. It then continues into a conifer forest trail for a further 4k, where the surface is more regular and graded as easy to moderate in places. The route then returns via the small tarmac road giving an opportunity for runners to quicken their pace for a sprint finish.
Walkers & Runners will have the same route, with an earlier turning off point for those that wish to do the 5k. Registration opens at 10am at the Gourmet Parlour Building, Collooney Roundabout, N4/R290 East Junction. The route is graded easy to moderate, and will be signposted & marshaled throughout. The entry fee is €15. Family rates available. All proceeds to MS North West Therapy Centre, Ballytivnan, Sligo. Refreshments & Sandwiches afterwards.
