Sunday, January 22nd, 2012 There was another tremendous day of top class athletics at the Nenagh Indoor Stadium today for the Woodie’s DIY National Junior championships.

One of the best races of the day came in the men’s walk with two athletes crossing the line practically together. James Treanor (Shercock AC) and Evan Lynch (Clonmel AC) traded places several times during their 3,000m race with Treanor entering the finish straight on course for a good win. However, Lynch had other ideas and he finished the fastest to edge ahead on the line for an excellent win in a time of 12:49.43 to Treanor’s 12:49.88.

Kate Veale (West Waterford AC) added another national title to her collection when she easily won the women’s 3,000m walk in a time of 13:29.37.

Sophie Parkinson (Gowran AC) had a throw of 12.29m to win the women’s shot, while Patrick McSweeney (Bandon AC) had plenty to spare when winning the men’s shot with a best of 13.21m.

The two 1,500m races provided two worthy winners with Michael Carey (Clonmel AC) winning the men’s race in 4:10.88 and Mary Anne O’Sullivan (Tinryland AC) winning the women’s race.

Shane Fitzsimmons (Mullingar Harriers) set a storming pace from the gun in the men’s 800m and quickly built a big lead. Dean Cronin (Blarney Inniscarra AC) worked hard to get back at the leader and caught him with over a lap to go, passing him before going on to win his second Nenagh race in two days with a time of 1:53.89. Iseult O’Donnell (Raheny Shamrock AC) was a good winner of the women’s 800m in a time of 2:26.98.

Phil Healy (Bandon AC) recorded a double, winning the 60m in 7.73 and the 200m in 25.76.

Greg O’Shea (Dooneen AC) won the men’s 60m in 6.9H from Patrick O’Connor (Clonliffe Harriers) 7.0 and Keith Pike (Clonliffe Harriers) in 7.1.

Karl Griffin (Tir Chonaill AC) put in a stunning run to win the men’s 400m in 50.43, but has no intention of moving down from his preferred 800m distance. James Greene (Ferrybank AC) chased him home in 51.53.
