5k Bay Relay first success The first 5k Bay Relay was held on Thursday 21st July in Southpark, Galway. COPE Galway and Enable Ireland were delighted with the interest in what was their first collaborative fundraising event and, with over 85 teams participating, the two charities hope to make it an annual, or even bi-annual event.

The course followed a fabulously flat and well marshalled route along the Salthill Prom to Seapoint and returned again via Southpark. While this was a novel running event for Galway athletes, all participants revelled in their team support, clapping their teammates’ hands in style as they came through the relay changeover area. The first team home on the night in 56:19 minutes were Collinamuck Tri Team made up of Mark Breen, Martin Divilly and John Greaney. The Ashford Racers (Regina Casey, Fergal Flynn and Gary Doherty) took second place in 58.44 minutes while race sponsors Mile 20, whose team members were Ronan, Alan and Nigel Forde, finished in 58:50 minutes. Various other prizes were given out to first, second and third winners in the Corporate and General Public categories at the well attended post-race party which was held in Monroe’s Tavern.
