The final day of the Woodie’s DIY Juvenile Indoor championships was devoted entirely to relays, the day when the shouting and roaring of athletes and spectators is almost enough to raise the roof on the Nenagh stadium. The day was split into two with the un-even ages competing before lunch followed by the even ages after lunch.
By the time of the break three new records had been set. Dundrum South Dublin shaved just under one tenth of a second off the 2010 record set by their own club in the U19 4X200m; North Sligo boys U15 smashed the record of 1:44.14 set by St. L. O’Toole two years ago with a time of 1:41.83 in their 4X200m; and Galway City Harriers won the boys U13 4X100m in 53.16 to better Craughwell’s 2009 and Letterkenny’s 2010 time of 54.97.
The afternoon session managed just one new record with Leevale winning the boys U14 in 1:50.44 to better the 1:50.75 of Nenagh set last year. A feature of this race was the Abbey Striders team who DNF’d when their third runner pulled a muscle. At the time they were running stride for stride with Leevale, and they were, needless to say, distraught afterwards.
Amongst the visitors to Nenagh over the weekend were Junior Minister for Sport Alan Kelly and Nenagh Town Mayor Seamus Morris who were both impressed with the stadium.
