We’re back for 2011 – and judging by the interest to date ( even though we’re a pretty well kept secret) the race is set to grow . I’ve even had an enquiry from Iceland First to complete his entry form has been Dave Sexton from Coleraine; and he’ll therefore have the honour of wearing number 1.
If you’re thinking of entering – don’t delay too long because there are only 50 places.
SPONSORS BACK
Of course the event can’t go ahead without sponsors and I heard just today that Belfast City Council will again be helping us through their excellent “Support for Sport’ scheme which I’m relieved to say seems to have survived the recessionary cut-backs.
Already in are our main backers Energia, Ireland’s leading business energy supply company.
Energia’s Michael Ringland says: “ The event is a great ad for teamwork, the motivation of the runners combined with their friendship and encouragement for each other.”
And, thanks, too, to Michael Jenkins from the Up and Running shop in Belfast and Newry. He ensured we had the best of technical T-shirts and some great ‘hoodies’ last year.
CHAMPIONSHIP
For the first time we are recognising a ‘24’ hour race in Ireland as an Irish Championship. We are proud to have the title – but that doesn’t mean you have to be Irish to take part !
The world governing body, the IAU( the International Association of Ultra Runners) has also again recognised the race with a Bronze Label.
And, Olympic Champion Dame Mary Peters will start the race – only right really as it’s her track!
WIDER CHOICE
Just in case you don’t think you’re up to keeping going for the full ‘24’ – I’ve also introduced a 12-hour race which will start with the 24ers and finish at 6.45am in the morning.
And,there’s also a ‘24’ hour relay in which the team of 4 must include at least one woman.
However, I suspect that most of you out there will be ‘loners’ out to make it round the clock and make it to that magical 100 miles mark and beyond.
EVERY STEP OF THE WAY RECORDED.
And, I’m delighted to day that the boys from Precision Timing in Co. Clare will be back to faithfully record every lap – and battle sleep deprivation to keep you updated on your progress.
