A host of runners took to Galway racecourse on Saturday to participate in the Vhi A Lust for Life run series inaugural event in Galway. The run, in conjunction with the Irish Independent, saw runners, walkers and joggers of all abilities complete a unique 5km route around one of Ireland’s premier racing destinations.

The Vhi A Lust for Life Galway Racecourse 5km was won by Matt Bidwell in a time of 16:49. Fergal Walsh was second across the finish line in 17:24 and Brian O’Connor secured third place in 17:33 and in the female section Niamh Hennelly came home first in a time of 19:18. Mary Kealy was second across the finish line in 21:25 and Sinead Costello secured third place in 22:06.

A Lust for Life ambassador Niall Breslin said that “It’s so encouraging to see people embody the A Lust for Life message nationwide, and I’m delighted to join everyone at the Galway run today. Our message is simple, we would like to put mental health on the map, and our race series helps to deliver this message around the country. I’d like to thank Vhi and the Irish Independent, who help to make our run series happen. I have seen first-hand the benefits of running and exercise, and it’s fantastic to see the people of Galway get behind the initiative.

Speaking at the event Kieran Shrahan, Vhi Healthcare, said “Vhi is very proud to partner with A Lust for Life and the Irish Independent on the 2016 run series, and would like to thank all of those who have joined us today to support the initiative. This is a fantastic event, which encourages people to develop their mental and physical wellbeing through running and exercise, as well as raising much needed funds for hundreds of worthy causes nationwide as part of the series.”

Niall addressed participants on the principles of A Lust for Life ahead of the race, before they embarked upon the flat, fast course around Ballybrit.

Funds raised go towards the running of A Lust For Life, which is a not for profit social enterprise. The mental health organisation Aware is also a charity partner.

Next up in the Vhi A Lust for Life Run series is the night run at Cork Airport 5km on September 30. For further details please see www.alustforlife.com or click HERE
