SUMMARY:Run For a Life
DESCRIPTION:The 11th year of the Irish Kidney Association’s Run For a Life. \nPictured at the launch of Irish Kidney Association’s ‘Run for a Life’ family fun run was dialysis patient Sam Kinahan (age 4) from Baldoyle\, Dublin 13 with his parents Ivan and Chloe and sister Ali (age 8).\nRace starts at 2pm with number collection from 12pm\, with a 2.5km\, 5km or 10km on offer with a mass start. Accurately measured 2.5km circuit. Start / finish beside car park. \nMedal for all finishers and our famous ‘Soup and a Sandwich’ too! €20 for adults\, €10 for children and €45 for a family (up to 2 adults and 4 children under 18 years). \n \nAt the photocall Chloe Kinahan\, a native of Mullingar\, said that\, “In his short lifetime my son Sam has been receiving dialysis treatment for four years and eight months and that’s almost as long as he has been alive.\n\nSam is a patient at Temple Street Hospital and has soldiered through his illness as a happy little boy who seldom complains. One of the issues that comes with his condition is that he has never eaten properly because of his restrictive diet and he has primarily been tube fed. While he will enjoy the ceremonial blowing out of the candles on his 5th birthday cake he will not be able to eat it. His interests are typical of any young boy of his age and he loves watching Transformers and playing with the power hero robots in disguise.\n\nWhile he is on the the deceased donor kidney transplant waiting list we anxiously await news that his father\, Ivan\, can be his living kidney donor as soon as possible. A donor kidney will be the catalyst for transforming Sam’s life and a new kidney will be his transformer!\n\nSam has attended the annual Run for a Life every year since his first as a baby being pushed along in his buggy by his father. We look forward to attending the event again this year and hopefully by then we will have received welcome news that Ivan can be Sam’s donor.”\nRay D’Arcy\, the national ambassador for organ donor awareness 2019\, will take part the ‘Run for a Life’ family fun run on 25th May. The fun event which is a celebration of life attracts over 500 participants annually. It is open to people of all ages and levels of fitness who can choose to walk\, jog or run in the chip-timed event\, which offers prizes for winners in a choice of 2.5km\, 5km and 10km distances. \nThe Run for a Life Entry fee is €20 adult\, €10 child and €45 for a family of up to 2 adults and up to 4 children. All finishers will receive a medal and entry fee also includes soup and sandwiches. For more information on the event visit website www.runforalife.ie    \n\nOrgan Donor Cards can also be obtained by phoning the Irish Kidney Association tel. 01 6205306 or Free text the word DONOR to 50050. Visit website www.ika.ie/get-a-donor-card or download the ‘Digital Organ Donor card’.

SUMMARY:Portumna Forest Marathon
DESCRIPTION:Portumna is a small town in the heart of rural Galway on the West Coast of Ireland. The name Portumna comes from the Irish word Port Omna\, meaning the landing place of the oak tree. So not surprisingly\, perched on the edge of the quaint little town is a magnificent 450 hectacres of coniferous woodland of Scots Pine and Norway spruce. Portumna Forest Park is also home to a whole host of animals including Fallow deer and the red Squirrel. Every June\, the agility of the wild animals in their natural habitat is mimicked by the ‘best of the best’ of distance runners from all over Ireland. In recent years participants have come from all over the world in their quest to find the ultimate Ultra marathon. \nTaking part in the Portumna Forest Marathon is a spiritual experience – while it tests the body physically it soothes the mind in equal proportions. The runners\, crew and marshalls blend in with the environment and although there is plenty of clapping and encouragement for the runners there is a serenity about the place that bows down to the beauty of the natural environment. Everyone talks a little softer and smiles a little wider. When those inevitable Irish rain showers put in their short but frequent appearances\, everyone looks up at the rain drops through the leaves and marvels at the reflections of the rainbows in the puddles – appreciating the fact that the rain had a vital role to play in providing such a luscious backdrop for the run. \nThere is of course a more practical reason that this Marathon remains one of the most popular ultra events in the country – Portumna\, whilst rural\, is also very accessible from all four corners of the country. \nBy the time nightfall descends on a summer Saturday night\, over 1\,000 competitors would have completed one of the five races on offer -100km\, 50km\, Full Marathon\, Half Marathon or 10k. The fact that runners of all ability and speed are running together turns the event into a motivational haven where training tips and running experiences are shared enroute and everyone leaves determined to move up to the next distance before returning next year. \nFor more infomation on the event click HERE

SUMMARY:Clifden Lifeboat 10k Run
DESCRIPTION:About us\nFundraising for the RNLI and the Clifden Lifeboat\n\nThe inaugural Clifden Lifeboat 10k Race took place on the 14th September 2008\, in a bid to raise funds for the RNLI and the Clifden Lifeboat. \nThe event was held close to the anniversary of a tragic event which shocked the West Galway community. The MVF St Oliver sank in bad weather on the 17th September 2004\, claiming the lives of 4 local fishermen\, including 18 year old Mikey Mullen\, who had only been at sea for 6 months. This race was organised as a tribute to Mikey and the other three fishermen who lost their lives. \nDue to the overwhelming positive response we have received following the first race\, it was decided to make this into a yearly fixture. The race is open to all athlethes\, as well as leisure runners and walkers\, and can be entered into individually or as teams of 3 or 4 people. \n\nThe race\n\nRace start at the Court House\, across from the Topaz petrol station. It is an out and back route\, which goes up the scenic Sky road and while walkers will be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery and views of Clifden Bay\, it is challenging enough for any serious runners. \nIt returns by the Thomas Whelan Memorial\, to finish outside the Alcock and Brown Hotel in the town centre. A water station and race marshalls will be in attendance at the turn back point. \nYou must give your race number to marshalls at this point before turning back. \nThe route is accuratly measured by an AAI official\, and will be well marked out with markers at every kms (on the road). Marshalls will be in attendance at every junction \nRace categories\nTrophies for 1st\, 2nd and 3rd overall male/female\n\nRunners\nTrophies for 1st male and female Under 40\, Under 50\, Under 60 and 60+ \nWalkers and Run/Walkers\nTrophies for 1st \nTeams\nPerpetual shield for 1st team\, and smaller individual trophy for each winning team member to keep. Smaller individual trophies for each member of 2nd and 3rd team \nTrophy for anyone who can beat the best finishing times\n Men 35.34 minutes (Martin Lyons\, 2010) \nWomen 45.07 minutes (Rachel Mannion\, 2010) \nEntry fee is 20 individuals or 50/teams
