But we have more than our fare share of people to be proud of. Mullingar is where it all started for performers Joe Dolan\, Niall Horan and Niall Breslin. The Swarbriggs are from here. So is soprano Ailish Tynan. Mick Foster lives here. Then\, that’s hardly surprising\, for there can be few towns in Ireland with as vibrant a music scene\, with so many bands. \nAnd indeed\, providing early training for many who’ve gone on to become professional musicians are two great local institutions – the Schola Cantorum music school at St Finian’s College\, and Mullingar Town Band. \nThe town has always had a great theatrical tradition too: the annual pantomime books out early every year; there are several drama groups operating locally. James Joyce spent much time in Mullingar – and indeed\, even gives the town several mentions in Ulysses. \nSir John Betjeman visited the area – and wrote a poem here; Ginger Man author JP Donlevy still lives here. \nThis is a town with a great sporting heritage: if you like GAA\, rugby\, soccer\, you’re well catered for. And it’s equally the case if you like athletics\, cycling\, golf\, tennis\, swimming\, bowls\, pitch and putt\, pool or greyhound racing. You name your sport\, and you’ll find it locally. \nIt’s got a lively nightlife\, with loads of great restaurants; loads of great pubs\, and plenty of great places to go clubbing. \nIf you like the outdoor life\, there are three major lakes all within a ten minute drive from town; we’ve got the fantabulous Belvedere House\, where all manner of activities and festivities and fetes and festivals take place all year round; and Mullingar Town Park is a beautiful place to escape from the hustle and bustle. \nFor shopping\, a feature that attracts visitors is the fact that the main streets are lined with small shops. If you’re looking for something unique\, and fashion is your passion\, then you’ll have a field day in Mullingar. \nThe museum at Mullingar Cathedral is home to vestments that were worn by St Oliver Plunkett; a ring belonging to Marie Antoinette; and the mosaic murals in the Cathedral itself are the work of the famed Russian artist\, Boris Anrep. \nWe know Mullingar is a great town. But we don’t really like to brag.
