Crowe and Maher Head Into Worlds Action

Irish Hurdlers Updates Pa Maher and Timmy Crowe will run the biggest races of their lives this afternoon in Canada when they both compete in the Men’s 400m hurdles at the World Juniors. Action gets underway at 13:35 Irish time and Timmy Crowe is first into action with Maher in Heat 5

There are 7 heats with the first three in each heat plus the three fastest losers moving onto the semi-final. Crowe is in a tough heat and is ranked 7th on time. He may not progress to the next round but a PB could well be on the cards. If he does PB anything can happen as not all athletes will perform to such expectations. Timmy commented last night that the heat was stiffling hot and he said "I went for a short jog last night of about 500m and I was sweating like a monster". Crowe comes from a good pedigree as his father, also Tim, is a three time Irish champion and was offered a scholarship back in 1974 to be coached by the great Billy Smith who coached David Hemery to Olympic gold. Timmy is planning to go hard and be in contention at hurdle 5 and then push on from there and be in touch with 100m to go.

National senior champion Pa Maher will be in heat 5. Pa is ranked 3rd on time in the heat so has a great chance to progress. Pa also talked about the heat and said he will be ‘slapping on factor 50’ but that he is feeling very good and nice and rested and he too is targetting a PB which of course would be another Irish Junior Record. Pa is drawn in lane 6 with the fastest man in his heat, Estefani from Brazil, just outside him and the other big danger Steven White from the USA in lane 3.

Christine McMahon will be in action in her heat tomorrow.
