Connemara Adventure Challengers take on high winds in the West!

Connemara Adventure Challenge 2013 This is Connemara at its best – trails, bog, rugged peaks and choppy green water. Almost 600 competitors registered for this year’s Connemara Adventure Challenge, the well known 32km adventure race that runs through the stunning scenery of Leenane and Killary Harbour in Connemara. This year Diarmuid Collins from Cork was the first male over the line in a time of two hours and nine minutes, with Kate Cronin from Dublin taking the women’s top spot in a time of two hours and 18 minutes, after battling fierce competition through the run, kayak and cycle stages of the race.

Taking you from Killary Fjord across the foothills of the Maam Turks, along the Western Way to the Inagh valley and finally back to Killary Fjord, the Connemara Adventure is a super training race for the more experienced adventure racer and an ideal tester race for the less experienced.

“This year with extremely windy conditions, the course was more challenging than usual, so all competitors should feel really proud of themselves” said Mona Purcell, Race Director with Gaelforce Events.

Three disciplines are involved in the Connemara Adventure Challenge – trail/mountain running or walking, kayaking and cycling – which take you to the finish line at Killary Adventure Centre. Competitors were greeted with delicious homemade soup before letting their hair down at the after party that night at Killary Adventure Centre. As with all Gaelforce events the after parties are legendary and give competitors a chance to wind down and enjoy a well deserved reward for a hard day on the hills!

The Gaelforce team is now gearing up for their next event, Gaelforce North in Donegal on June 29th.
