Join us for the FIT City Run Series this summer, kicking off on May 12 in Dublin’s Phoenix Park before rolling out in Cork City on July 21. There’s a €3,000 prize fund and goodie bags to be had (as well as a fun and competitive race).
Winner’s will be profiled by Fit Magazine and race results will be published within the Irish Independent the following Monday. It’s not all about personal glory though – the City Runs will also benefit Athletics Ireland Fit4Youth programme.

These 10K runs are perfect for runners of all levels, and if you’re a complete beginner then follow Deirdre Hassett’s training plan right here

This is a new and exciting initiative currently being piloted in Kilkenny, Carlow, Bagnelstown, Waterford and Craughwell, with plans for further development in Cork and Dublin. The Athletics Ireland Fit4Youth Programme is the brainchild of former Irish international athlete and Kilkenny native Geraldine Nolan, a former graduate of Providence College, Rhode Island, USA, and a finalist in the 1,500m at the 1994 European Track & Field Championships.
Together with her team at Kilkenny City Harriers Athletic Club, Geraldine has already achieved considerable success with her newly launched fitness programme for young people, specially tailored for boys and girls between 13 and 18.
Over 100 teenagers have already engaged in the Athletics Ireland Fit4Youth Programme at Kilkenny City Harriers. "The programme is not a ‘quick fix’ solution to getting teenagers active, but rather a long-term plan of looking at the bigger picture and complementing what is already working in juvenile & junior athlete level in athletic clubs," says Geraldine.
One of the aims of the programme is to help foster an awareness of fitness and the enjoyment of running among teenagers over a set number of weeks. The aim is to gradually build up the training in a ‘Learning to Run’ programme to a point where everyone is capable of completing 5k. The training is paced and carefully monitored with the emphasis on incremental increases in training.
"This is a new and exciting development for Athletics Ireland and a welcome addition to the Fit4Life programme for adults that has been adopted by over 120 athletic clubs across the country," Athletics Ireland CEO John Foley said. "We are delighted that the Irish Independent/FIT Magazine City Series of road races will contribute to making the Athletics Ireland Fit4Youth Programme an even bigger success in the future.”
