Quartet nominated for Track and Field Athlete of the Year at National Athletics Awards

Athletics Ireland have announced the nominations for the 2014 National Athletics Awards in association with GloHealth. Athletics Ireland have announced the nominations for the 2014 National Athletics Awards in association with GloHealth.

 Track and Field Athlete of the Year nominations:

Thomas Barr (Ferrybank AC), who set a new Irish 400m Hurdles record of 48.91 at the EAP meet in Geneva. Mark English (UCD AC) winner of the bronze medal in the 800m at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich.

Kelly Proper (Ferrybank AC), who ran a personal best of 23.15 at the European Championships, placing tenth overall and Paul Robinson (St Coca’s AC) fourth in the 1500m at the European Athletics Championships.

Endurance Athlete of the Year nominations:
Brendan Boyce (Letterkenny AC) for placing 16th and setting a new personal best time of 3:51.32 in the 50km Walk at the European Athletics Championships. Fionnuala Britton (Kilcoole AC) for placing eight in the 10,000m and tenth in her marathon debut at the European Athletics Championships.

Mick Clohissey (Raheny Shamrock AC) winner of the national half-marathon, 10,000m national track title and the Inter Club Cross Country Titles and Paul Pollock (Annadale Striders AC) for setting a personal best of 1:02.09 for 30th place and fifth European at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships.

Junior Athlete of the Year nominations:

Marcus Lawler (St Laurence O’Toole AC) set a new Irish Indoor 200m record (21.26) and qualifying for the World Junior Championships and Emma O’Hara (AC) set a new Irish Junior record of 58.98m in the hammer and qualified for the final at the World Junior Championships.

Sarah Collins (Finn Valley AC) set a new European Indoor Junior Record of 15.41.00 in December 2013 in Boston and Karl Griffin (UCD AC) reached the semi-finals at the World Junior Championships and for running personal best of 1.47.44.

Emerging Athlete of the Year nominations:
Phil Healy (Bandon AC) and Sarah Lavin (UCD AC) for setting new personal bests in their respective events and qualifying for the European Senior Athletics Championships in their first year out of the junior rankings. Both athletes were members of the Irish 4x100m team that set a new Irish Record of 43.84 at the European Athletics Championships.

Ciara Mageean (UCD AC) for securing the national 1500m title in her first race back after injury and for placing third in a high quality Fifth Avenue Mile Race in New York. Christine McMahon (Ballymena and Antrim AC) for significantly lowering her personal best in the 400m Hurdles to 56.97 and qualifying for the semi-finals at the European Athletics Championships.

The People’s Choice Award is an exciting new awards category this year, full details on the nominees and the voting options will be available on Wednesday 15 October.
Following on from this the 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee will be revealed on the 22nd of October.

The awards will take place on Wednesday 26 November in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Northwood.
Other awards presented on the night will include the Ultra Running Award, Mountain Running Award, Master Athlete of the Year, Tailteann Schools Boy and Girl Award, Team Performance of the Year and University Athlete.

For the third year running their will be awards presented to Performance Club of the Year and Development Club of the Year.

The award ceremony also commemorates to Athletics Ireland’s exceptional volunteer base. In recognition of that, awards will be presented to Outstanding Coach Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award.
