The National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI) is a voluntary based charity located at the Clinical Science Institute, University College Hospital, Galway.

Launched in 1991, the key objective of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute is to conduct relevant, ethical research into the biology of breast cancer, to determine the cause of this disease and improve the treatment for patients.

The NBCRI also works to raise awareness of breast cancer and fundraises to provide improved breast cancer services for both Men and Women throughout Ireland.

Over 2,500 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in Ireland each year. Although breast cancer in men is rare, about 18 -20 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in Ireland. As yet breast cancer cannot be prevented. It’s incidence can only be reduced by early detection. The cause and mechanism of action of breast cancer remain unknown. Treatments are available for breast cancer but ongoing research is essential to ensure the optimal treatment for all patients, to reduce their side effects, improve their quality of life and, primarily, increase their chance of survival.

For further information on Breast Cancer Research please refer to the NBCRI website www.nbcri.ie or Lo Call 1890 611711.
