This weekend sees an extraordinary athletic challenge take place throughout the Connemara region – 26 people will attempt to run an astounding 100 miles. The event has never been promoted or advertised and just started out as a friendly challenge amongst local ultra running enthusiasts. This year the Connemara 100 mile race has attracted athletes from many parts of the world including Spain, Germany, France, United States, Canada, Australia, Russia and the United Kingdom.

No stranger to extreme running, the Race Director, Ray O’Connor will be keeping a careful eye on proceedings from Clifden where the race starts at 6am on Saturday morning. With a cut-off time of 30 hours to complete the distance the final participants are expected home sometime on Sunday morning having battled through the night.

The course is described as an amazing ‘tour on foot’ of all the beauty and splendour of Connemara taking participants from Clifden, through Letterfrack, Leitirgeish, the Inagh Valley, Maam Cross, Leenane, Inagh Valley again and the on to Roundstone, Ballyconeely and back to Clifden.

This race would not be possible without the generous sponsorship from John Sweeney and The Station House Hotel Clifden and the support of Lough Inagh Lodge and The Leenane Hotel who give the runners and their crew access to much need essentials such as hot water, ice and a warm welcome.

Follow the event on Facebook @connemara100 and Twitter #CNM100 where live updates will be posted throughout the 30 hours.
