Foster and Barr progress in European Championships

Mixed day for the Irish at the European Championships in Zurich. Irish record holder Amy Foster has got through to tomorrow’s semi-finals of the 100 metres as a fastest loser, but Phil Healy is out.

Waterford’s Thomas Barr won his heat of the 400 metres hurdles, meaning he is through to tomorrow’s semi-final, but 23-year-old Jason Harvey missed out on the semis having finished seventh in his heat.

Barr, who is looking to become Ireland’s first male finalist in the event, said: "It was good as I have not raced in a couple of weeks.

"Qualification is not too bad but tomorrow is the real test to fight for a place in the final. I need to attack each hurdle and really go for it from the start."

Medal hopefuls Brian Gregan and Richard Morrisey will run in the 400 metres, while Limerick’s Sarah Lavin runs in the 100 metres hurdles.

Mark English and Declan Murray go in the 800 metres at this evening as does former European cross country champion Fionnuala Britton in the 10,000 metres final.
