CARRICK-ON-SHANNON 10K RESULTS – SUNDAY 4TH MARCH None

To the surprise of many the day dawned bright and the numbers arrived at the Aura Leisure Centre and the Sports Complex to make this the largest field yet assembled. Please find below all the athletes under 40 minutes, the 1st 3 Ladies and the age group winners for the men and women. There was a large field of both runners and walkers somewhere close to 800. 456 runners came in within 81:06.
UK international Mark Dalkins paid a first visit to Ireland after recently winning the Majorca marathon and set a new course record of 32:57. He spent the weekend in the Carrick-On Shannon area and ran the course in advance so he estimated that the 2 lap hilly course would not trouble his PB of 30:11. After the fast initial downhill K he broke away at the start of the hills and established an unassailable lead through to the finish. Mark will be back next year and is intending to break that record and to bring along both Chris Davies (10K PB of 28:43 and a current Welsh international) and also Amanda Davies ( 10K PB 36:15 ) to increase the competition at the head of the field. Next year is the 400th anniversary of Carrick-On-Shannon and it promises to be a competitive race on Sunday 3rd March 2013 so note it in your diaries now. Mark also spent time visiting supporters of the race including Murtaghs, Esquires, Vittos, Lough Key Forest Park, Eco Energy Solutions and Gene Anderson’s Thatch Pub as well as a tour of the Galway Hooker brewery in Roscommon confirming what a great area this is to visit and would like to thank all for their hospitality.
In his wake Mullingar Harriers sent a strong team to claim the team honours and had a thrilling battle for 2nd place with Mark Carroll just holding off Tom McGrath. The home town club of Carrick AC took 5th (Clive Glancy) and 6th (Johnny Keenehan) with the two proponents again separated by just one second showing the progress earned through all the speed work over the winter. Behind them a creditable 27 runners broke 40 minutes featuring a solid contingent from Sligo AC and there were particularly notable performances from Tom Hunt (1st M60 – 41:02) and Dermot Lowe (1st M50 – 36:23) in the age group categories where all winners received trophies/certificates and/or prizes. All winners will be contacted if not awarded on the day.
In the Ladies section Mary Scully of Mullingar Harriers came home in 37:06 ahead of Norah Newcome in 38:26 representing Seoul Flyers from South Korea. She is originally from Ballina and came over for the race so we can truly say we now have an international event in Carrick-On-Shannon with runners from at least 16 counties as well as Australia and Japan.
