May Bank Holiday Sunday Almost 700 entrants raised €3000 for Bantry Hospice and a further €7000 for various local and national charities when they partook in The Bay Run half-marathon and 10k run between Glengarriff and Bantry on May Bank Holiday Sunday.

This was the first time the race had been organised and managed by the team at The Maritime Hotel in Bantry and it is being hailed as a great success by the organisers and participants alike.

“We were delighted with the turn out for this year’s Bay Run,” said James Cleary, Bay Run Race Director. He continued “It was our first year operating as a charitable company, Bantry Bay Run Ltd, and we are delighted to have generated €1,000 for the Bantry Hospice and a further €300 which was very kindly donated by Dr Matt Murphy, who was the doctor on duty for the race.” The event also managed to contribute a further €1700 in sponsorship money generated from people running in the event solely for the Hospice. All in the entire event was able to generate €3000 for Bantry Hospice and a further €7,000 for other national and regional charities.

The Bay Run was a true community event with locals turning out in huge numbers both to lend a hand and also to cheer on the participants. The water stations were manned by Bay Rovers AFC; Derrycrehea National School, Glengarriff Community Group, Bantry Blues GAA, Bantry Hospice Committee.

“We would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard work and enthusiasm. Thanks also to the local Gardaí especially Sgt Trish O Sullivan, Sgt. Finbarr O ‘Regan, Garda Cormac O’Leary and Garda Peader Healy. While Ruth O’Brien from the Bantry Town Council was invaluable in facilitating road repairs along the route in the lead up to the race.”

“We’ve learnt a lot from this year’s event and the feedback we have received from the participants and spectators has been invaluable. We look forward to an even better Bay Run in 2015 now that we are very proud to announce we have the first ever Bay Marathon to compliment our Half Marathon, Bay 10Km and Family Fun events. Registration for the 2015 event is now open with very special offers for those real early birds.

The Bay Run 2014 was proudly sponsored by The Maritime Hotel, Rowa Pharmaceuticals, O’Keefe’s SuperValu Bantry and Powerbar and is being organised in conjunction with Bantry Town Council, Bantry Business Association in aid of Bantry Hospice.
