St Etienne Lyons Ultra Marathon
Just wondering if anybody has done this race?
It is 68Km so about 4 miles longer than Connemara but there seems to be a lot of climbing and descending in it. Also it is part trail.
Also it starts at 11pm so it is a night time one for some reason!
How does it compare with Connemara for toughness.
Here we go.
I came across it on the Activeeurope.com website when looking for races in Franc in Dec.
Great video on it.
Well I managed to get round in 8:23 and I was happy with that.
Started at 12 midnight and it took me just over 2 hours to cover the first 10 miles. It was very rough terrain. Climbs up paths barely wide enough for two people with lots of loose rocks and/or mud to trip you up and slow you down. Some of the paths were also very, very steep so you had to walk up them and sometimes down as well as I could not keep balance on them.
The refreshment stops were good. Loads of food, water, soup etc.
The weather was as good as it could be for 6th December. Very cold but luckily no rain and no wind. When I flew out the Wednesday after wards it was snowing so we dodged that nicely.
One strange thing I noticed was that everybody I came across was French. I did not meet one other person from Ireland, the UK or America. Surprising for an event that has been going for over 50 years.
And I will return next year to try and break the 8 hour barrier.
A couple of us have entered for this. If anyone has any info it would be much appreciated. It's quite difficult ot navigate the website with my poor level of French!! All we've done so far is enter so if you had any info about where to stay, what to carry en route, getting to and from the start/ finish etc., that would be great.
Cheers
Aisling
You will need a survival blanket, you can get a cheap on in the Great Outdoors, a head torch and spare batteries, leggings are advised as well as a few layers including gloves and hats etc.
The head lamp and survival blanket are compulsory. The midnight start explains the lamp.
It was dry last year when I ran it but was snowing when I left on the Wednesday so play for very cold and wet weather.
You need to get to the St Etienne before 10 to complete your registration and pick up your number. You will need a doctors cert saying that you are fit to run the course.
You could stay in St Etienne the first day if you have somebody to move your other stuff to Lyon and have checked in there.
I found it best to stay in Lyon. There is a bus running from the Palais de Sports de Gerland to the starting hall in St Etienne. €10 last year. The underground in Lyons was free as the Festival of Lights was on.
The aid stations on course provide hot drinks, water, cola, chocolate and biscuits etc but I would always take my High5 gels with me. Take whatever you feel comfortable with it as you are better off with what you know.
Also you can use this link to translate most of the web page from the SainteLyon;

Best of luck with it. I thought it was amazing. Watch out for the hill in that village around mile 30-32!
Thanks for that Scraggbaby, that's great. If you're based in or near Dublin the gang would love to meet ya and discuss the event details. I think we'll have a gang of ten or so going.

10. Thats a good gang of ye. I am actually considering going to it again myself this year but am still undecided.
I work in Dublin so I can surely meet up with ya sometime. Live in Newbridge so can meet up some evening or some Sat,Sun if you want.
You can text me at 087 639 2327.
The race is tougher than it looks on the website. Upon seeing a video of the previous years event about 3 hours before the start I revised my extimated finish time down by 1 1/2 hours!
And was right to too.

I don't really know anything about this but am thinking of doing it and I live in Saint Etienne. Would be happy to help you out if I can?
Dammit. I entered it again.
I am staying in Lyon so will be getting the shuttle bus down. I might meet you in the hall in St Etienne.
