Newbie Training for Goofy Challenge
I intend doing the Disney "Goofy challenge" at the beginning of January 2011. This is a half marathon on the Saturday and a full marathon on the Sunday . I am not sure how to go about training for this. Do I just double up on runs at the weekend working up to 10 /12 mile runs on the saturday and the usual long runs on the Sunday like you would for a regular marathon? ie lots of 16's 18;s and 20's ?
Any advice welcome. I currently run about 4:10 marathons but hope to get that down below the 4 hours this summer
Its called the Disney marathon weekend and its usually around the 6th of January. It starts with a 3k I think on the Friday. Saturday is the Donald Duck half marathon. Sunday is the Mickey Mouse full marathon. The Goofy challenge is to do the Donald and the Mickey. The marathon starts in the Epcot centre and you run around this park . Then you run to the next park and you do the same. YOu go around all the parks. There are characters on the way and you can stop and have your photos taken with them. It sounds good craic. it starts early at 4 or 5am before it gets warm. Good medals and technical gear etc.
Im taking the kids to Florida this Christmas/New Year and will finish off with this.
Wow that sound amyazing and great craic, be a way to get the family to actually come to a race with me! Where did you get the information? Might try and talk someone into doing it with me? You should go for gold and do all three runs cause if they are on that early the family won't miss ya! Anyway it is possible to do the full and the half the day after each other especially as there is no real travelling between venues, if I can do it anyone can with a bit of planning. Best of luck with it but I'm sooo jealous that would be an amyzing venue to run in for a race! I was there a couple of years ago and it is very runner friendly environment. So best of luck, yvonne
Thanks. Not sure how to put in the internet link thingy but if you google disney marathon weekend you should get it easily. good few from the runnersworld.co.uk forum did it this year.I think it you do the same thing in the LA disney , you get a special disney coast to coast prize too. Sure we could run across America and pick it up there. You on??
Disney LA, never been there bout time I did don't you think? Sure why not scooby, sure wouldn't running across the states coast to coast be a nice warn-up for the main event don't you think? Have to go google now!!! But think just for this year maybe I'll just support our own....another way of saying I'm broke..... Irish style haha!! But you never know sure wouldn't it save himself havent to think of an xmas pressie for me!!
Would love to do an ultra. YOu give me great hope and courage and confidence. I guess - just go fror it and see what I can manage. Best of luck with the big 3. Awesome woman that you are .
Finn
Thanks for that Finn, and that's exactly what I'm doing, just going for it and see what happens and all of them will be personal best....for this year anyhow! It will be one step after another till hopefully the final mile is completed, but I very much appreciate your positive comments, yvonne xx
Get back on here aftger and let me know how you get on.
Did i read on another thread that you are pretty much incapacitated with the guts?
Sympathies to you and I hope you get better fully as soon as possible.
Well you certainly encouraged/inspired me. Maybe i shouldnt have been looking at Ultra threads cos I have just gone and entered my first ultra in Portumna.EEK! Maybe you will join me there seeing as you wont make Connemara this time?
Hi scooby, ya you did read right I'm very much laid up with a stomack bug. Have it 5weeks now the first week was the worse tho...but I can't shift it have been back to the doc twice with it the first lot of antibotics didnt touch it so am stronger ones now..but can't determine what's worse the bug or the effects of the drugs!! Though I can't get myself to send the email to Ray to offer to help as I have friends doing the full and half and 1 doing the Ultra and everything is arranged but defo won't be up to doing it this year...be stupid to try am just wiped out completely. Yes I am doing Portuma also the 100k though that may have to change depending on how long it takes to get fit again....so its a date meet you there, am really looking foward to it never ran in that part of the country. We'll get our 1st Ultra together now...happy days yvonne
Is that your first 100K? Respect to even consider it !
I am in the West of Ireland. Where are you? I was wondering whether I should book a room in the hotel at the start of the race? Didnt dare put another post on the boards or I will be struck off as a nuisance. Have though of nothing else since I registered for the 50k.
I am going to folow the ultraladies schedule but do perhaps one interval session during the week. Was surprised to see back to back long runs for this distance but that should work out well for preparation for Goofy. Doesnt seem to be a facility on her for PM's. Do you post on boards.ie?
Hi Scooby I'm in Gorey, Co Wexford. I'm booking into the hotel the night before and the night after the event! Don't think I'd be able to drive after the 100k plus there is a triathlon on the day after and I'm hoping to do the tri in Westport in August so it will be worth taking a look while I'm there...I've never done one before! Don't know what board your talking about, but I'm sure that they are there just for that reason to post questions and recieve answers. What schedual are you following? It's been trail and error in my prep to date and am disappointed not to be doing Conn, I don't want to be stupid and mess up the whole year over one race, but it would have been nice to see how well I would have done? But missing so much training before the race is not the way to go....right at the moment I don't think I could walk the length of myself never mind run 39miles! This is the second time I've heard that name boards.ie might just check it out myself and see whats what. I've read Mick Rices report on the 100k he did and it seems to consist of back to back fast marathon distances and while that distance is not a bother I don't know about fast nor the non walking part in the 100k...hopefully this bug will go quickly and I can get back to training asap! See you in Portumna and keep me posted on how you are doing in your training I may be able to rob some tips etc...but either way be nice to keep up with each other before the big event, yvonne
This is where I get most of my encouragement adn advice from. I started off on these boards but found they were very quiet. Someone gave me a link to the runnersworld.co.uk where I have met many brilliant friends . This is the Irish equivalent in that it is very active. I hardly ever remember to check in here as the posts arent as frequent. I still like it though :-)

www.trailrunevents.com is where I got a lot of information , especially how to manage a 100k. Eventhough I wont do one for God knows how many years .
Training wise I am starting a bit late . I did 15 on saturday and only about 6 on sunday. GOIng to aim for a 20 next weekend but Im not sure I would manage more than a 5 or 6 the following day, if any. I find that I am getting slower at the moment as it is ages since I did any kind of speedwork.
Was thinking about doing marathons at training pace for the 26 mile training runs. I think I m disciplined not to race them. I would happily tootle around. So will aim for Newry at the end of May and if I can find something else in June?
HOpe the bugs are getting hammered.
Na the bugs are being more resilient than I thought possible and it's really getting me down! Have cancelled Conn and am playing the 100k by ear. If I have to I will drop to the 50k and chalk it up to experience and go for both again next year. At this point the only race I'm sure about is the ultra in Dingle and thats only because its in September so plenty of training time to go for that one.... Before I got sick I was doing one week where I did all my runs for time say between 2 to 3hrs and the longest of 5.5hrs+ and the next week for miles say day 1,between 9 and 12 easy, day 2 between 15 and 36 easy, day 3= 12 miles easy, day 4=9-15 miles fartlek, day 5= 10.5-15 easy, day 6= 12-15miles fartlek and on the 7th day I row! It was working for me and I was enjoying it but as I said it was trail and error! For the 100k was just going to up the miles on the longer runs and maybe do two of them in the week or maybe just do double ups on some of the days. Bearing in mind that life has a way of ruining the best laid plans. Read a great quoat which said make out your lifes plan but make sure to do it in pencil! I tried the boards,ie last night but didn't find it as user friendly as this sight and now thanks to you I have more to try and see where to get more information. I find that with most runners information is freely given but when the distances change to the Ultras the information is a little harder to access as most people will have done and understand marathon distances but Ultra's don't seem to be as common. But that could all change with more of them coming on line which allows for a great deal of variety when running. I to am also doing Newry, am looking foward to it, it's a nice course and I'm hoping to do a bit better than last year, am also signed up for Cork and the Mourne Mountain off road before Portumna but as I said before these are really timed training training runs for me, but should be good craic none the less. It's not as if I have much experience at marathons only begining them last year but have found that my speed and endurance was improving slowing with all the training, hopefully when I get back to the training it won't take to long to get the fitness levels back up as I will be starting from scratch again building up from the point I start from, ah well at this point its just to get back...hopefully in the next week or so fingers crossed, yvonne xx
Thats a lot of miles. Cant wait to meet up and chat with you about it all. Guess Newry will e where we meet. I signed up for Belfast too even though it wll be two in one month - I guess that is what I am trying to achieve.
Is your doc confident that your bugs are being cleared? Are you able to take anything that will boost your immunity? even from the health shop? YOu will cetainly be lighter , even though its the diet from hell. Start off with babyfood - pureed fruit and veg and easliy digestibel babyrice. Might be able to tolerate that and its full of vitamins and no chemicals. Health stuff unti the get to a certina age and then they get niggest and chips and pizza. !!! Get well soon
Ah scooby feel like your following me haha am signed up for both limerick on the Sunday and belfast on the Monday to fulfill my ambition of two marathons on the same weekend hehe God I love a challenge! Yep be good to meet up and chat. Have organised to have a friend collect my number in Belfast in case of delays driving from Limerick to Belfast. The only prob in my plan is that I'm supost to be taking part in the celtic challenge a row from Arklow to Wales that same weekend so what to do....the challenge only takes place every two years...but my place on the team might be gone with missing training soooooo see ya in Belfast!?
This isnt a stomach bug...its your gut going into meltdown saying .... no more please, we want a rest . we are fed up being giggled around so much . LOL
I dont want to put my phonenumber up here , but if you PM me on boards as hot to trot , I can be a standby number pick up for Belfast if your friend gets into bother.
Ah thanks for that saw the name on the boards there are some really cool ones have to pick a good one...maybe go for donkey...would suit my running style lol I have three friends going to Belfast and the guy from there rang me for some reason to check I got my number so I asked him if it was ok to have them collect the number so he said grand and took the details so happy days but will be gud to have a back up plan, so thank you, yvonne xx
how are the guts today?
Not bad thanks. Am trying your suggestion of the pureed fruit and veg thoug not together lol, I know I'm a crap cook but even I am'nt that bad. Am having very small portions and as often as I think things will stay down. Had a small bowl of porrage this morn and so far so good! Now if I could only beat the tiredness I'd feel like I won the lotto! Tried on boards.ie to send you a message its not as user friendly as this sight or maybe I'm just not use to it haha. M e and technology are never on the same page haha
Dont for get the babyrice- you need the carbs and the puree veg/fruit on its own may have too much fibre :-)
Ah didn't forget the carbs just had plain white bread and that's as much as the stomack could handle today! Did go on a coulpe of those sights you suggested. The boards.ie doesnt appeal as its not as user friendly as this one but then I have to give it a try before I give out! The other two were bright and appealing and I've already got some good info especially on training scheduals so happy days. There were scheduals for 50 and 100 miles but nothing for a 100k so I emailed the name and just asked so am waiting for a reply. But it was an interesting morning, very informative so thanks for that scooby
Hi Scooby, good news three days and counting and the tummy is defo getting, if I could just now beat the tirdness I would be on the pigs back but that too will right itself soon I hope. Then maybe I can get back into training! God I miss it! Hope your training is going well yvonne.... ps was to lazy to lof on!
Glad to hear you are on the mend. It has been a long road for you. Ultra sick is no fun.
Ah well at least I did some type of ultra this month lol. Yep defo having more good days than bad days but can't shift the tirdness ah well one thing at a time. Hopefull be back training next week just small runs to start with...God it's been so long think I've forgotten how haha

Hi Scooby sounds like a mad challenge do tell more, where is it on, just nosy havent heard of this but sounds like savage fun! First of all my marathon times are about an hour slower than yours but last year I only just started running marathons Connemara (22nd March 2009) was my first attempt to run one! But I wanted to really challenge myself so in September 09 I did the Dublin Half Marathon in the Phoenix Park in 2.20 on the Saturday and then travelled to Donegal to do the full Mooathon on the Sunday, absolutely savage hilly marathon and I did that in 5.09. So OK my times are slower but what I'm saying is its very possible to achieve your goal. I just trained for the marathons using the schedual from the Irish Runner. I just ran and over time built up the time spent on my feet and the miles in my legs. Not knowing what to expect doing the two on the same weekend my only goal was to complete the two races and time wasnt a consideration, only to finish both comfortabley. Also I didn't really know what I was doing, still don't haha. But I think just doing lots of runs as you said above is the way to go with it. This year I am hoping on the May Bank Holiday to do the Limerick marathon on the Sunday and then do Belfast on the monday and my training for that is just back to back long runs. For the half and the full last year I did a long run every week with slow mid range runs and a shorter faster run, but it really was just pure guess work. Hopefully somebody with more experience will give us the benefit of their experience! Best of luck with your challenge and training love to hear more about it, yvonne
