Why are marathons held on the Monday of a Bank Holiday?

It seems to me to make far more sense that they are ran on the Sunday. What is the tradition or thinking behind this?

I'd agree with the above. Although it might make more sense to the runner to have it on the Sunday, the Monday is probably ideal for the organisers.

Each city only seems to have one marathon a year so it would only be one weekend of inconvenience. I think we should lobby! (how does one lobby?)

Bank holiday monday is probable the quitest day to run a race, little traffic to disrupt, easy to steward and for major races, you have sunday (another quite day) to prepare. put out barriers, finish line etc.. just off the top of my head..
