running shoe shopping in Galway??
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone can recommend a decent place to buy running shoes in Galway? (or Mayo) I need some good advice as I often suffer from twinges in my knees when running. Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)
Elvery Sports across the road from the Galway Shopping Centre has a threadmill with a gait analysis program attached to it. I have not tried this myself, and believe it to be sponsored by nike, so it may be just a way to push the Nike brand. No specialist running shop to my knowledge in the Galway area, and nothing that I know of in Castlebar or Westport.
You can try that Elvery sports, but I can not be sure the sales staff in there would be experts. John Buckleys Shop in Cork is a great place for advise, there web address is http://www.johnbuckleysports.com/
Best of luck with knees, let me know if you find a good spot in the area, could do with advise myself.

Shop in Castlebar on Castle St that does gait analysis etc
Thanks guys, any idea of the name of the shop in castlebar? Will be in galway on saturday so might try elverys and see how i go - won't be rushing to buy off them tho - any elverys i've been in before has been no help at all!
thanks for the feedback!
Sorry Guys,
I have to jump in...... what about runireland Shop ?

Could not resist toward competion :-)
Anyway good luck in your shopping !
I'm all for buying online but unfortunately I need some advice on what I should be buying, if i knew what i needed i'd buy online in a flash!
i found the runnin machine in elverys in galway very helpful and the guy there is very nice doesnt push the dearest pair on u and mainly recommends asics.
Must try that machine then in Elverys, had it done years ago and got neutral cushioned shoes recommended to me. But starting to get shin splints at the start of my runs, they go away after a few minutes of discomfort. But I wonder if the way I run now may have changed (have a couple of extra stone weight on now).

Ever try lifestyle sports? They offer a decent range of running shoes that cater for all athletic injuries, every style from the asics gel kayano to the adidas supernova
Would'nt recommend the Elvery's shop in Galway, as i bought a pair of runners after doing gait analysis when down for the Galway Marathon(from Donegal). Sold me a pair of asics 3010 and have had nothing but problems since, with feet blistering very badly after only five or six miles. Back to the old Nike's for me !!
well guys, I was in the Elvery's shop in galway on saturday. I did the gait analysis but the girl who did it didn't really have a clue, so she got help form another sales guy in there. The conclusion was I pronate and need a support shoe. Which would have been fine except again, the girl who was advising me didn't really know anything about the shoes and just told me the prices of the different asics shoes that have support. Tried on a few but I wasn't convinced - for example the asics kayano gel shoe just didn't feel like it had any support when i tried it on compared to my current asics shoe. Bought nothing in the end as feel i'm none the wiser really
so, can anyone recommend a good support shoe that I can go and try on? Otherwise think I'll have to make the trip to dublin for soem decent advice - what a pain!
try the 2150, great support
I wouldn not recommend Elverys either, I got gait analysis and then recommended arch support runners but they made a mess of my feet and lower leg muscles. I have high arches so arch supports gave me no room for manouvre. Cant wear the €110 asics now. Back to my trusty New Balance.
footmotion is the name of the shop in Castlebar. They know what they are doing
Hello all;
I'll be coming over to Ireland from New York to take on the Connemara and wonder if anyone can recommend a cheap motel /B&B / friendly neighbor in need of company/ etc., or would like to share a room?? Will work for food. All thoughts are much appreciated!

I would highly recommend Riverwalk House b&b in Oughterard. I have stayed there the last two years and am there again this year. It is absolutely excellent. Don't know if they have any vacancies left. I'm not sure of exact €??? but it is very reasonable. All the best Meg.

re: Elvery's Shop in Galway.
yeah it can be a bit hit or miss, so while I got good advice from the guy in Elvery's they didn't have a decent range of shoes that I could choose from (neutral). Galway really lacks a specialist running shop. Had to do what your doing and drove up to Bray to Amphibian King in Bray. Got excellent advice plus more technical analysis of gait, picked up a pair of Brooks there and haven't looked back since. But its a pity to have to go to all that bother. Market opportunity awaiting someone who wants to open a store not just shoes, but kit and supplements etc..

Thank you, Denis! I just put in a request to stay the nights of the 10th and 11th. I hope they still have availability. In regard to the run, if you are back for a third year I guess the phrase "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" does apply!

Ug, the Riverwalk house is booked!! Does anyone know of another guesthouse that is near the start of the run?
Much appreciated!

Hi guys,
well i checked out foot motion in castlebar - website looked great and i thought i was on to a winner - got to the place, and it was empty, no sign to say they'd moved and no answer from their phones so i'm guessing they're gone out of business - typical!
so anyway, i think i'm gonna have to make the trip to bray like everyone else.
but before i do, has anyone heard of a place called footsolutions in galway? coming up on a google searcha nd just wodnering if it exists or is any good? i know some of you have already said tehres nowhere good in galway but said i'd ask anyway - thanks for all the help!
i booked into Riverwalk back last July but in Dec they rang to say that they had kept all the rooms for last years people but she got me a room with her sister who also had a b&b within walking distance so perhaps they could give you that number?
FootSolutions might be worth checking out. I went there before I went to AmphibianKing. The manager said up front that he wasn't running a specialist running store so it doesn't have the range of shoes but as I recall he does have some running experience himself. There are runners in the store and I think they even had the Brooks runner that I ended up purchasing in AmphibianKing. Of course that was purchased with the benefit of a load of advice and slow motion photography etc... which FootSolutions didn't have (at that time). Footsolutions perhaps undersell themselves a bit, if he had pushed things a bit I probably would have ended up buying the Brooks there as it was the only neutral shoe they had. I'd say definitely check it out -they may have beefed up their running expertise.

I broke my leg back in November 2006 and I had to get a metal plate and screws in it. I started running again in May 2007 and I have been running ever since without experiencing any problems with my leg.
Since mid January I have been experiencing some stiffness in my leg and I get the odd twinge of pain in the area where the plate is when I am out running. When I am walking it is fine, but it seems to stiffen up if I sit and don't move it for a while.
I remember people saying to me after I got the metal plate put in "you will feel that in the cold weather".
Do you think the stiffness and twinges I am experiencing could be due to running in the recent cold spell we have been having. I had been working abroad since the beginning of 2007 to April 2009 in a country with a warm climate all year round, so this is the first winter I have been running in cold weather since I broke my leg.
Any advise would be appreciated. All being well I will see you in Connemara for the marathon!!
HI,
just re the shoe shop in galway.. I gave up looking and took advice from this forum and went to Aamphibian King in Bray, Co Dublin.
They specialise in running and walking shoes and I have to say provide an excellant service.
They check your arch, size, gait and and spend time finding the right fit. Shoes were regular price and no extra charge for the service.
I got myself a pair of Brooks in the end, well worth the trip.
guys...as a runner and a chartered physiotherapist I would recommend you get gait analysis by someone who is qualified to do so and then get advice on footwear. If you are in Galway I am at Physio4u in oranmore 792871, if you are in city i'd recommend Sharon Morris (galway city physio clinic), if you are elsewhere go onto iscp website and check out your local private practitioner. All you have to do is call and ask does a physio have experience in gait analysis and orthtotic prescription it also helps if the physio is sporty as they understand more than just the book stuff!
It is every important you wear the correct runner and it is not the guys in Elverys fault they dont get proper training and i'd rather they were honest instead of telling you you must buy this or that shoe.

Dont like to bad mouth any shop but the assistants in Elverys sports dont know their ass from their elbow. Tried the gait analysis machine in which the shop assistant gave a vacant stare at the results before showing me a shelf full of shoes and telling me any of these will do. Stuck to my old faithful shoes for now, better the devil you know.
I had a similar experience in Elvery's but with a happy ending. Asked one assistant if they had a particular shoe in a half size. He had no idea what i was on about so I asked him again and he just looked at me and said 'I dunno' and rather than going to find out he just stood there staring at me. Luckily another shop assistant came over and he knew his stuff. He showed me the gait analysis recommended a couple of shoes and then let me try them out on the treadmill. He wasn't pushy for a sale either. Just seemed like a decent running enthusiast.
IHi there,
I actually do Gait Analysis in the Elverys Sports & we're there to recommend the right footwear for your foot type & dont give out any medical advice where a specialist physiotherapist would. We have been trained to identify a runners foot style only by people including specialists from Nike, Asics & New Balance & we dont pressurise anyone into buying any running products they dont want. If you call into a physio around the Letterkenny area most of them actually recommend us & have been in to see our Gait Analysis service & all have left very pleased with it. Not sure what store use called into any its actually the first bad reports i've heard about it but if you call into the Letterkenny store & ask for the PB180 specialists we will show you we know our stuff about our products
