rowing machine

hello, i am new to this site and to running ,I was thinking of buying a rowing machine to build up the strength in my legs (running 5 miles 4 times a week ) is this a good idea or would it be any great benefit , thanks for any advice.

Hi anthonyc. with running like that you should build up the strength no problem, just make sure your resting between days! as for the rowing machine, personally im gonna say no. you dont want to be concentrating on strenghtening one muscle alone all the time otherwise you may get injuries later down the road. for strength i concentrate on doing several things like, squats, lunges, cycling once or twice a week. another one i do sometimes for strength is sitting on the ground, alternating between raising each leg with weights on the ankles for few seconds, hold, then release. just be careful coz if your doing long distances you dont want to have muscles like a sprinter, its strength not muscle you gotta bear in mind all the time. good luck!
