Roscommon (Strokestown) Marathon : The Bogtrotters Marathon
Come on folks, there is still time to enter the Bogtrotters Marathon in Strokestown, Roscommon thsi coming Saturday, you can pay cash the night before or the day of the race! This will be a marathon that will grow by word of mouth, its the Connemarathon for the midlands, going through some fantastic scenery only available in that part of the world, you run from a Georgain Mansion, up the hills of a valley, into 'organic' bogland (i.e. not the Bord na Mona commercial bogs) touch the Shannon and cirle back to the mansion and estate. This will be one of those that you will be glad that you will be one of the few that will be running it on its tenth anniversary when there are thousands queueing up!
Btw I am not in any way attached to the running/organising of the event, but I am from Roscommon (who will be Connaught Champions by next weekend) and can guarantee that you wont get a run like this anywhere else in Ireland. I think that from all the work that has gone into this event that it is well worth supporting and is very good value expecially if you register as a team. You wont regret ir
neither did I dsedeath......what happened to the lovely flat run you promised us????
Its totally flat through the bog, flattest run in the world....you just have to get into the bog bit :) Have a look at the elevation profile, bit steep at 4 and coming back into the valley again at 16, all else you could roll marbles on it! And Roscommon are Copnnaught Champions, going going running in the primrose and blue next weekend!!
I did the bogtrotter half marathon today and was very disappointed with the disorganisation. The run itself was very enjoyable, however the trouble started after the finish line. Runners were supposed to be bused back to Strokestown after the half marathon. However, we were left shivering in wet clothes for an hour and a half to two hours depending on when you finished. We were told every 10 mins that the bus was on the way yet there was no sign of it. When a bus did arrive it was a small mini-bus which was totally unacceptable. After paying €50 euro entry fee this is totally unacceptable and I for one will not be signing up for this run again.
A very poorly organised marathon, disgraceful course markings, one banana at the end an overpriced coffee shop,
This was trail running not a marathon. The cambers on most of the tarmaced areas were terrible, and on the tracks the sones, puddles an ruts were dangerous. Not to mention the the part around mile 21-22 where it was impossible to run it without risking injury.
I heard some of the other marathon runners stopped at the half way mark and waited over an hour for the coach which actually turned out to be an overcrowded minibus.
A yoga warm up which included warior moves and deep squat strength poses is not the way to start a race.
Some of the faster runners ended up doing an ultra because of the course markings and lack of stewards.
This was done on the cheap (aside the entrance fee of 50E which was not cheap).
I would love the organisers to learn from their mistakes and be honest about them. I would also love to know how much of the entrance fee actually went to charity and what the costs were for this event (if any)
Having said that the volounteers must be praised for their help and they are not be blamed for this calamity , the race director needs to make a statement on this one.
Thanks to Scooby and Yvonne, came to Roscommon and I hope enjoyed the race and the countryside.
Had to run off to the wife and new child so cheers, will catch at a race near you in the future
What kind of sadist are you dse. A few hills !!!!!!!!
Suffered yesterday, and the journey in to the wilderness at about 22.5 was a tad frightening if interesting.
Still, satisfaction in the stiffness today but I reckon thats the hardest 26.2 I've ever put in.
Bit disappointing there wasn't a sandwich at the end and I hope Gerry Forde's new chair is still working today.
Looking forward to Longford if only for the rest.
Probably be back in Strokestown next year though - everybody needs something to be able to bitch about.
Hi dsedeath yep loved yesterday, even if I only managed the half but it was amyzing as you said it would be, hills aside! Will be more prepared for this next year and since we were the only team to enter I think we should go for it again next and see what happens....we probally scared off the competition when they saw the team we entered:-) Hope the wife and new baby are doing well, see you at the next race yvo
Well that was tough. Got a right slating on boards.ie but I thought the course was interesting although it was very tough going across the boggy bit where the civil defense 4wd got stuck.
Think I twanged a calf muscle too , was afraid of letting the team down so kept soldiering on.;-)
HOpe the mother and baby are well. It was lovely to meet you all. Will have to be better prepared next year ( i feel hill sessions looming) and have another go for team honours. Toweys boys did very well though looking at the times. well done that family
Wasn't as prepared as I should have been, got over the hills and hit the wall at about 19 miles, pace dropped off drastically after that. Had got to half at 1:41 so time got hammered after the hills, but as you said, not your run of the mill road run. Next year all guns blazing
So are we a team in preprations for next year??? Have to do it again as a team so who's on for it??
Next thing is Dublin, then hopefully Conn (maybe Ultra but only maybe), then Strokestown again, but hope to be better prepared for uphill running by then

"up the hills of a valley"
Hi DSE,
I've already registered and will be there next Saturday but I didn't know about the valley hills!!!!!!!!!! LOL.
Cheers,
